  • Hello guys,

I’ve been having all sorts of trouble with the QuickTime (actually called, “Final Cut Pro Movie Files”)

First of all, half my compositors don’t know what format this is because the file contains no info telling it’s .mov. Should I type .mov into the file name when I save it?

Several of the compositors are having trouble opening the clip even when I’ve told them it’s a Quicktime file. Could this because I named the file #3 Bridge Jump (Primary Shot) instead of 2_Bridge_Jump_PrimaryShot.mov ?

A friend told me that all files for VFX work shoudl only use letters, numbers and _ for spaces. Maybe this is the problem.

Either way, I’m very unhappy with the QuickTime exports. Is there another way to export the files to be exact Quicktime files with .mov file extentions and to be fixed in 16:9 windows?

    Any help…would help,

    Thanks,

    Will Keir

  • Oh very cool, thanks a lot guys.

  • Tom,

Thanks a lot. That was very helpful information. Still getting used to FCP and the little details. Much appreciated.

“The real question is why are you exporting and where are you trying to go to.”

I’m exporting files to be used by a digital compositor who will use Apple’s Shake to make composites for the clip. They’ll be opening the file with Shake, and I’m not sure if that program is going to recognize that the clip is anamorphic.

I’m sending these files online through my FTP to my compositor, so I’m taking other clips and trimming them down, and exporting them as streamlined as possibled so were not waisting all our time uploading and downloading.

I still have a bunch of questions about what happens with the anamophic footage, is there any articles that go further indepth on this matter?

But again, my main goal is to export trimed down, hassel free footage so my compositor can get the file, make the composites and send them back to me.

  • I, more than anyone, never want to sound redundant or ask the same question twice, but sometimes simple answers without an explanation leave me thinking that there’s something left out.

I’m not trying to waste anyone’s time, I appreciate all the help COW has provided, and I wouldn’t want to abuse that privilege.

So when I ask again, and it seems identical, maybe there was something left out the first time I asked, maybe I wanted some clarification, perhaps I felt my first question was worded the wrong way and my question wasn’t really answered (BTW: The two posts weren’t identical). After all, this issue had to do with editing my master clips.

I don’t like feeling like I have to defend myself, I’m not looking for an argument or to fight anyone, I’m just here trying to learn, you know? And to be honest, it’s kinda insulting for you to take the time to post telling me that I’m being, basically, stupid, instead of just trying to help me out.

It would be more helpful to have some compassion towards my ignorance and maybe some understanding for why I might ask a similar question twice in the same day.

So that’s that man, I really don’t like that I had to even post this reply, overall, you made me feel rotten and unwelcome on this form.

    Sincerely,

    Will Keir

  • Well the whole picture is a bit more complicated Arnie. You see, I’ve got a sun 56k modem here at my home office, so I’ve gotta go into town to do all my uploading and downloading. Thanks for the advice, the main thing I was looking for was that I would not be losing quality, and it seems that I won’t.

Those programs are a good idea, I’d use them if I had more speed.

    Thanks again.

  • Thanks for all the imput guys.

Most of the files are less than 50mb. I was playing on sending them the way I logged them, QT’s .mov files. Don’t know about uncompressed 8 bit or 10 bit, doesn’t that mean I’ll have to relog from DV again for this format?

I would think the .mov’s would be fine, since there the files I’m using to do all my edits as it is now.

Another thing, why use all those uploading/file transfering programs?

Is there anything wrong with simple FTP? I’ve got my own website that I can host it off of and I’ve got plenty of space. I was going to just upload the files for my compositor, and give him permission to upload them back my way.

Sometimes too much information just mixes me up. *KISS*

    Thanks again guys,

    Thanks Matt, good to know.

    Bret,

Not really too sure what you were trying to say, would you mind being more specific?

    Thanks for the posts guys,

Hey thanks for the info Walter, but one questions is left unanswered.

My question is basically this. I was rushed to capture a mini-DV tape before I handed it off to my partner, who lives 8 hours away. So I didn’t get the chance to individually capture the takes I wanted.

Instead I captured the whole tape. Now I have a huge, long file which I don’t want in it’s entirety. Instead I want to pull a few takes that worked and trash the rest of the file. And let’s just say I have several tapes like this. Now… all my human error’s aside, is there a way to create smaller files from the main one without losing a bit of quality?

That’s why I’m asking the questions; I am not going to do this If I lose quality when I take the smaller clips and export them as their own files. I’m also not sure if this method will change any video options. I assume if I have the file logged, anamorphically, then I edit on an anamophic timeline and export it with the built it properties then there should be no video changes.

The main concern I have is quality, will I lose quality doing this?

    Thanks again for any help,

Thanks for the advice Dave. I’ve been looking at several of these boxes online and prices range from $130 to $550 and up.

I decided on the Canopus ADVC110 Converter because Canopus seems to be highly regarded as a company and all the reviews on amazon for the unit were exactly what I wanted to hear.

I was going to go with the cheeper ADS-Tech Pyro, but it seemed “Junky” and the reliability and user responses didn’t give me much confidence. So I’ll spend the $100 for peace of mind, I heard this unit also works through firewire power, so that means no AC adapter cords and the cleaner the setup the better.

Also, for anyone looking for what I’ve been looking for, this box doesn’t require any software and works on both PC’s and Mac’s.

Having rambled on way too long, I thank you all for the advice and help, thanks a lot guys.
