As stated, the time of day can have a big impact. The ‘magic hour’ as Terrence Malick calls it.

I went a bit overkill and got the Corsair GS800 Bronze ATX PSU 800w. I plan to upgrade graphics card in the near future and I’m not paying the electricity bills. Thanks for you help everyone.

All good to know, thanks. I seem to remember my system warranting about 360 watts of power (minus the 4 hard drives I ab about to put into the comp). What would a sensible power be? Also, are they easy to install or should I consult a professional?

When I was building the system, the power demand came in at something like 370 watts. Does you comment still stand in this case?

  • I agree with the above post. I just built a desktop and it’s beast. I’m currently editing a 2:45m music video consisting of 500GB of RAW 5k .r3d files, and although the preview is lagging a bit, you could never do this on a laptop. My system only cost £1000, and if I wanted to update a graphics card, for example (bare in mind footage will become increasingly more laboursome, and these updates might become necessary further down the line), I’m free to do so with a desktop.

Also, thanks for you swift reply – I will try with these proxy files asap (I wouldn’t have know if you didn’t tell me).

One more question: Because I’m editing RAW, I’m able to access the raw information ie color temperature, exposure, ISO etc. If I create proxy files of these raw r3d files, am I able to continue to access and adjust the information within the RAW r3d files, or will I have to create a new proxy files every time I adjust the raw ISO, for example?

I haven’t tried this. My workstation is a few miles away at the moment, in London.

Tell me, what does proxy editing entail? Are there any drawbacks or complications from editing proxy files? (nb I’m not very experiencing in editing – I’m still in the learning stages and have never edited highgrade footage before on this scale).

This was helpful to me. I’m creating a video for Filipino TV and the footage on my timeline is a mashup of lots of footage. Should I render upper/lower field first or progressive scan?
