March 10, 2015 at 9:05 pm in reply to: questions about color correction (conversion)Hmmmmmm, I believe i understand it now. Thanks for your guys patience to explain it to me, I’ve been doing a lot of research a lot lately, but this whole new slog2 workflow from sony has really made get somethings confused. However, I learned a lot of valuable new information, that i should perhaps already know.
And regarding the LUTs then, am I right if i say that a good colorist should be able to grade the image and maintain a consistent look without using any LUTs??
Thanks again.

Perhaps i wasn’t clear enough, or maybe you didn’t get my question right. Let me try to explain this again.
Firstly just to make it clear, the footage coming from my camera isn’t really RAW, like the one from RED, ALEXA, BLACKMAGIC cameras. It’s a XAVC-S file wrapped in .MP4 (basically a high-end version of h.264 as far as i know, because it’s 50mbps instead of regular 24mbps)
So, let’s say I get the file straight out of the camera (in MP4) without transcoding it, and color correct it, then grade it (the ”raw” file).
Then I finally export as a h.264 for youtube or vimeo. But as far as im concerned, most TV’s and internet can only display 6 stops of dynamic range. (rec709)So where in the process did I convert the initial 12-14 stops to 6 stops?? When I exported the graded files to h.264??
In any case, what is the best codec to export my graded footage to?? (without loosing any Dynamic Range)

ohhh, believe i got it now. i didn’t know i could tell twixtor my native input frame rate. that makes more sense.
also, i’m using premiero pro. i just realized i posted this on the ‘icloud’ thread. i’m sorry. i meant to click on the premiero pro thread.
thanks a lot Chris. you’re awesome.

yeah, i totally forgot to mention. i have twixtor and my intention is to use it on the clips as well.
what i don’t quite understand is: when i drop my ‘interpreted’ 120fps to 30fps footage on a 30fps timeline the whole clip is slowed down.
so, how can i have some a mix of real time footage (120fps dropping frames to be at 30fps) and at the same time add some slowmotion with twixtor??am i going to need to interpret my 120fps footage or should i just drop them into a 30fps timeline without interpreting?
-
ok, i think i got it.
so just to make sure i understood it right.
i will have a 30fps timeline, drop all my 60fps footage there, which will play at 30fps. and thenn on the parts i want to slow down, i take the footage i want, interpret to play at 24fps or 30fps. and then if i want to make a super slow motion i take the interpreted footage and add twixtor right???thank you so much for helping me out, i really appreciate it.

yeah, but if i have a 30fps timeline, than all my 60p footage will be dropping frames to match the 30p timeline right? and therefore i will have a sort of a choppy video.
what i wanted to do is make use of the 60p footage, and in some parts of the video throw in some smooth slow motion playing it back at 40% speed of 60p (which is around 24fps) plus on top this make some super slow motion using a little bit of twixtor.
so what im wondering here is on how to make the slow motion with the best results.
is it better to just change the speed of the clip to 40%? or should i interpret the footage to 24p and then add twixtor if necessary???
