You don’t have to do that if you stay entirely in Ae. You just use the comp as a layer, same as you would for any other precomp, and its master properties are exposed for animation directly in the timeline.

What was the error? Is there anything unique going on in the spot that won’t render? Any footage elements? Any third-party effects? Have you tried turning one layer off at a time until you identify one layer that won’t render, then likewise with any effects on that layer?

I do actually think Essential Graphics is the way to do this, and I think what you’re describing falls neatly within what Essential Graphics can do well.

But I’d use the Ae master properties workflow (instead of the Ae/Pr Essential Graphics template workflow, which has gotten a lot more press). This is literally an instanced comp, with inputs that you define within the comp and animate outside of it:

It’s a smart question to ask the technical team. Sometimes pixel maps will be pixel-perfect; sometimes, the team will want some safety/bleed in the renders.

Actually, there’s a new feature that will help you. Expressions got access to path points in Ae CC 2017 (v15).

That sounds really weird — are really frustrating!

No need to replace the footage with different rendered footage, though. You can right-click the footage and choose “Replace with Precomp (used X time[s]).” This will wrap your footage in its own precomp, and replace every use of the footage item throughout your project with the precomp instead. Then you can tweak the footage within the precomp.

That’s exactly right. Ae creates a temporary copy of your AEP, and that’s what AME references for its encode. You can continue work in your project and it will have no effect on any renders-in-progress that you had previously sent to AME.

You can take a lot of the edge off of a sharp digital image by simply adding an adjustment layer with a Fast Box Blur effect, then taking the opacity of the blurred layer way down. Experiment with blend modes for different looks.

Practically, you could put the cap on a string, pull it off fast, and do some light wire removal.

Digitally, you could do it without the cap at all; create the cap in post and animate it off.
