Right now I have a 4000 clip, 250 hour documentary sitting in there as a large project test. So far, everything has been really really good. The prep for the Cutters is the reason for the lack of blogs. We formed the group and pulled together that first meeting in just three weeks.
I’m doing a few new blogs this weekend actually. Is it perfect? Nope, but it’s quite good and it will start going into actual production in our facility over the next few weeks.

The biggest thing was “where do I go now?” Do they wait out FCP X or do they need to move on. There was no right answer. That was the point of getting all four A’s there last night. We were able to show a 20 preview of each app and then it was an open discussion about Post Production in general.

If you require Resolve, you need a BlackMagic card. Period.
If you want to use your AJA Kona board, you’ll need another color application.
In my facility we run one Mac Pro specifically for Resolve with a BMD Extreme 3D card in it. Our 6 edit workstations all run AJA Kona boards.

Yes, support will be from third party, not Apple.
[Ewan Lim] “Will it be costly? And also does tht mean we can finally import xml files from fcp7 and fcp6?”
Cost is entirely up to the third party. Apple’s own statements say you will not be able to move prior FCP projects to FCP X.

Well then that should be good to go.
I’m not sure what to suggest for anything else you’re having issues with at this time. I’m also brand new to Premiere Pro as well. We were having slow / stuttering playback issues originally but then determined that was due to the four core machine I was testing on. Since I moved to the 8 core, playback has been very smooth and normal with ProRes, XDCAM and P2 material.

Everyone is on “Apple time.” Soon is whenever Apple declares it to be unfortunately.
Precisely why we’re moving away from FCP / Apple altogether.

You need to have an 8 core machine minimum to make the AJA Kona work correctly with Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 I’ve already documented that in this forum. Particularly for ProRes material.

It’s all the things it doesn’t do unfortunately that is causing us to switch. But it’s all good, very exciting times for us and the editors here are psyched by what they’re seeing in Adobe so far.

Have not settled yet. Using Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 now in early testing because it works already with all of our hardware including our AJA Kona boards.
Just installed an evaluation copy of Avid Media Composer this week but have not really done much with it as of yet because of course the AJA Kona boards are not supported. Though the announcements from Avid at their event last week was pretty encouraging as far as their future path with the new MC 6. We will have Avid and AJA reps at our Atlanta Cutters meeting next week and hope to discuss some of these during our panel discussion.
Autodesk also sent me a copy of Smoke 2012 to evaluate as well. One thing I never knew is that there’s an easy XML path to take FCP / Avid / Adobe projects straight into Smoke for finishing. It’s pricey, but might be worth it to have one copy in the shop for finishing.
But for most FCP editors, I would suspect that Adobe Premiere Pro is the very easy path to go. It’s everything you like about FCP 7, but has all the native editing features, dynamic linking to all the other apps, killer text tool and a lot more. Also you can open all your FCP projects in Premiere Pro via XML. No third party tools required.
If you go to vimeo.com and look up my name, you’ll see three videos I’ve already uploaded on “Transitioning” that show how easy it is to translate your FCP workflow to Adobe Premiere Pro.
So for the short term, Adobe makes sense and I would not be surprised if long term we actually have a combination of Avid and Adobe. Being an independent Post house, it makes sense.

You convert all the GoPro footage to ProRes using Compressor. This is what we do here. Takes a long time depending on how much footage you have.
I recently had to convert 24 hours of GoPro footage to ProRes and it took three days on the fastest 12 core MacPro there. One of the reasons why we’re moving away from FCP 7 in our shop so we can edit with this footage natively.
