I don’t know, the very basic Decklink card sold for $300 allows me to ingest all 4 channels of audio from the Digital Betacam tape through SDI. Yes, it doesn’t provide any real-time compression, but it’s certainly possible.

I’m reeding the technical details and see there is a possibility to capture only 2 audio channels. Why???!!! Digital Betacam has 4, for example.

  • Hi Zane, thanks for your replay.

It’s the contract. I need to deliver both MOV and AVI captures with exactly the same TC matching the one of the original DigiBeta tape.

I was told it’s because the people in charge of the trailer uses Macs and the people in charge of the voice-over uses PCs.

So I try to keep my Mac based workflow and avoid to install some PC for AVI capture and capture each tape twice.

Daniel, it was my intention, but this color shirt disturbs me.

Hi Walter, many thanks for your replay. You’re right, the network always has the final say, but it’s not the case here.

As a distributor, I’m sitting in the middle, with the producer on one side and the buyer on the other. Of course, the producer always delivers the “incredibly good looking materials, from brand new telecinema transfer supervised by the director in person”. And the buyer sometimes says it’s junk 😉

During the Betacam reign it was more or less easy to check. I used to put in the contract the name of some big and respected lab and both parts were OK to let it decide if yes or no the materials meet the broadcast standards, should we have any problem regarding material quality.

Now we’re going tapeless, so I must find a new formula in case of. In the present case, the producer has delivered an uncompressed file to the buyer for DVD release. Now the buyer says his lab says there are dropped frames, audio sync errors and so on. The original file has been checked by our colleagues, it seems to be OK, but the labs insists it’s bad and the buyer wants to work only with this facility. We are in trouble ;-(

I can of course continue to put in the contract some lab’s name, but I thought there are new ways to control the video file quality for less. For example, I can use some software with a known presets and join the report to the file with its MD5 checksum. So, if the QC software says the file is OK and the file hasn’t been altered, it IS OK.

  • Kristian, thank you for bringing us good news. I’ve seen the info about Media Express 2.0, but didn’t notice this specific function’s availability. I was more concentrated on Linux support, also a good news for me, because I have an old G4 PM dedicated to Capture. Now I can replace it by a PCI-X compatible PC running Linux, if needed.

  • Greet, you write EXACTLY what I mean. While FCP is a great tool, sometimes one just wants to use a simple utility to capture footage and execute some other simple tasks. BlackMagic Deck Control is such an utility, but this unawareness of the channels 3 and 4 bothers me a lot.

If someone from BlackMagic reads this, PLEASE give us the possibility to capture all available audio channels. It will also allow us to dedicate one machine to capture, while editing on another one.

  • I second this question, I have the last version of Deck Control installed and I can’t find any setup to capture all 4 channels.

  • Bob, did you mean DVCPro50? It’s about SD, not HD. Any way, many thanks for your valuable help.

  • Bob, fair enough. Thank you.

The problem is, not only I need a new Mac, I will also need a new capture device, because DeckLink is a PCI card, not PCIe. And a Mac Pro + AJA or BMD card or iMac + IoHD or MBP + MXO2 is out of question right now.

In all other cases I will end up with a DV quality from J30 using the built in FW port.

I was hoping to keep the current stuff as long as I don’t need to deal with HD, but it seems I was wrong.

But it’s not hopeless. I’ve reformatted the RAID drives and finally I’ve got my uncompressed 10 Bit 4:2:2 capture ;-))) Yes!!!

So, the question number 2 is to chose the codec for work, because you are completely right, if I even try to work with uncompressed stuff using this hardware, I’m completely out of my mind. Prores 422, Cineform, DNxND or IMX50?

Maybe I’ll use the MDD just for capture, because it has the BMD card and the RAID enclosure with a card also compatible only with this hardware and buy an iMac for editing as soon as I can.
