Interesting post, we’re in the same position. With a municipal budget we move even slower with decisions. Once a purchase is made we’re stuck with that purchase for a LONG time.

What I worry about is, if we do continue on the old route or getting an Imac (everything mentioned above) how long support will last?

Back around 2004 we were still clutching on to our Discreet *Edit. Discreet (Now Autodesk) completely dropped support for it and maintaining our turnkey became more difficult. Are Apples easier to maintain even after support as been dropped? Can you order an Apple without Maverick now that the OS is Maverick? Or do you have to go through an independent to make sure its upgraded just to that point where FCP7 still functions properly?

Everything is such a mess now, throw in Adobe Cloud and it’s chaos. It’s like somebody is trying to make things more difficult as an experiment.

Thanks to Tom Grant for this post. We’re looking at the same options right now. I’ll be sure to copy and send this to my manager.

And no, you did not sound angry in any of your posts.

Great answers. I’ll give all that a try. Just out of curiosity I tried coping some components from my iMac in one office to the Mac Pro in the other office that’s experiencing the trouble. The component files would not attach an email, or be dragged to an external drive, and I couldn’t even get them to upload to a google drive. Then I thought, “Woops, I’m doing something bad…or am I?”

Still using the same system. Still using the same camera. The media drive just failed, poof, no more. We have a new media drive installed. And a new drive that had a new OX installed. The OS is still 10.6.8

As far as the company knows, they did not add or subtract any codecs.

Camera I’m using was built for Apple, the JVC GY-HM100U

.mov files I captured from the DV deck appear and are audible.

.mov files I dragged off my SD cards from the camera are audible, just not visible.

No matter what codec the files are. There were some existing ones on the good drives, and some new ones I drug off recent SD cards we recorded on.

And it looks like I’m not the only one. Only problem here is nobody solved the issue.

Over an hour later the program is still generating thumbnails (processing projects). Good thing is, it’s working at least and not locking up after I trashed all the cache and thumbnails. Bad thing is, what’s happening with it. Why does it go back to other older projects even after the user designates they want to start a new project?

I just trashed all the cache and thumbnail folders for projects I didn’t care about and it’s starting to respond to me better.

But it’s still processing and generating thumbnails for past projects I don’t want to work on with the wind mill thing spinning in the area where the time line usually is. It’s pulling up projects I hadn’t worked on since 2011.

Stil using Imovie 9 8.0.6. Office did not want to upgrade if we only use it to capture. It has been capturing better than FCP7 when we tape HDV.

  • It says HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 in the drop down menu under the easy set up.

Reading your response (thank you) – Switched from HDV-AIC60i to HDV60p in capture mode.

    I tried several variations.

Tried with HDV selected in the format drop down window, and (all formats) selected both times:

HDV 1080i60 Firewire basic (same thing)
    HDV 1080i60 (same thing)
    HDV 720p60 (same thing)

Every form of HDV listed under the “Easy Set Up” drop down menu that had 60 under it I used, and every time I noticed it shoved the format down to 720×480. And the picture was elongated vertically.

In capture preview mode and during capture, the aspect ratio looks like it should. But once the clip is in the time line it stretches in both viewers, and I get the red line every time.

I looked at the guys camera settings and they were set to HDV-SD60P for sure.

Only thing I can think of is to capture in one of those HDV 60 modes, and just stretch it to fit the window, preparing myself to wait for long render times I guess. Unless somebody else has another suggestion.
