December 5, 2013 at 4:31 pm in reply to: What kind of lights do you use or rent frequently? Thanks guys. Our fiscal year is coming to an end and I think we are going to try a 1.2HMI from cool lights. I researched it a bit from the posts here on the cow and it seems to be a cost effective alternative to the Mole Richardson or Arri lights I have been looking at. I was real impressed with having the actual owner call me back from China as well.
Always welcomed advice from both Todd and Mark. Either of you guys ever shot in Montana?

October 24, 2013 at 5:47 pm in reply to: Starting a small videography/production businessMy advice would be figure out what your market will support and what equipment you need to make money. For example:, there’s no sense in buying a 4K camera when your clients don’t even care if it’s HD.
Also camera and audio equipment changes quite a bit over the years, buy something that is going to last. C-Stands have been around forever and will continue to be a tool used in the TV & Film market.
Best of luck.

April 4, 2013 at 3:33 pm in reply to: Shooting a Press Clip Package for Broadcast – Frame RateAll the news packages we use for the Montana Television Network are shot in 60i. It’s a small market, but that’s the standard we use.

I recently switched over to https://www.waveapps.com after using quickbooks for a couple of years. It’s free and on the cloud. I found myself being able to track expenses and take care of bookkeeping on the go from my iphone, rather than waiting to get back to the office. There are limits to it, but you can synch it up to your bank accounts to track debits & credits, which is really helpful.
Also, you can invite other people to help manage accounts from the cloud. So it’s nice when tax season rolls around and I can share all that info with my CPA or have a PA do some data entry. I don’t want to sell you one way or another, I just know it has worked well for our company.
Hope this helps.

I work in Montana and seems like a lot of the shoots are outdoors. I’ve never gone wrong with just having a Carhartt jacket or pants. They are tough and will last a really long time. Hope this helps.

June 4, 2012 at 2:08 pm in reply to: Are DSLR’s still being used for broadcast TV? And should they be?Lydia,
I direct a morning show at a television station, all our studio cameras are not DSLR. However, I have worked on many shows where DSLR’s are still relevant and used, from commercial work for broadcast to nationally airing television shows. As for the question, should they be used for broadcast. They are cheap, have relatively quick work flow in post, and compact. Once the new generations get the audio figured out, I could see journalists being equipped with one to do news stories. Just my thoughts, take what you want and leave the rest…

February 8, 2012 at 6:52 pm in reply to: After Effects file won’t open…Stops loading at 93%The Control+Alt+Shift worked for me. I also copied my project to a different HDD and opened it there after I deleted the presets. This worked magic, I would have lost 60 billable hours otherwise…Thanks to everyone on this thread.
