FWIW, I have a samsung monitor (relatively new) connected to my MBP via HDMI -> DVI cable connected with a DVI -> Thunderbold/MiniDisplay adapter (apple brand) daisy chained to a laCie 2big 4TB thunderbolt drive. I am seeing the same symptoms as the OP.
