The use is uncertain but will most likely include studio, club and documentary stuff.

Someone showed me their $8K Sachtler(which they ‘got a bargain on at $6k’. My head almost exploded.

Yah. Contrary to some folks thoughts, a Neumann isn’t always better. A TLM 103 is a wonderful mic but it has a very wide pattern and a tipped up top and bottom. In a less than amazing studio with a lot of hard surfaces and plugged into the wrong preamp, it will suck.

Right now, I’m using a Neumann U 89 a lot for narrations. I’d be curious to know the reason why Glenn’s studio chose not to use their Neumann. Incidentally, one thousand dollars is not a lot to pay for a good mic. I have half a dozen mics in my collection worth more than that, and they sound like it.

The AT 4050 condenser mic is less colorful than the AT 4040 condenser. Both condenser and dynamic mics can color the sound.

The combination of a mic and a mic preamp also results in a certain sound. Plug the same mic into two different preamps and the sound may be quite different.

I think Samson is first to market a large diameter condenser mic with USB cable.

Your 1/8″ jack is probably stereo. The Rode VideoMic is a mono mic wired for those stereo inputs. It uses a 9VDC battery in its case. Try that.

Audio technica makes a Pro 24 stereo mic with 1/8″ plug. It uses a hearing aid battery.

The AT822 will also work if you get an RCA to 1/8″ Y cord.

All provided that your Vaio input will work with mics and not just line level sources.

It’s all about what you can afford. If you can afford a Sound Devices 302 or 442, I’d step up. I use the 442.

I was at an event this week where someone made the statement that the 24 is NOT the same as the Sound Devices Mixpre, after which it is modeled.

I’m trying to clarify that now. ANyone know for certain?

The Mix pre, while only a 2 channel mixer, is a really god piece of gear. Line outputs only so you’d need pads if your gear is mic input.

The MixPre has an excellent limiter.

No good way to get rid of it other than manually pasting room tone when you can. Did you hear this when it was being recorded?
