As a sound person, I would lobby against any location that made good dialog matches impossible. I normally tell the director what problems I hear, let him/her hear what I’m hearing in my phones so they can hear the problem, and explain the problem in simple details. If the location can not be altered, you get what you get and try to fix it in post, maybe even with ADR.

The use of sound blankets or other grip gear to minimize the background noise is certainly a possibility. Instead of blocking the sun or other lights, you’re blocking sound. It’s more difficult with sound, but it can help.

Gating may or may no be a good option in post, depending on the amount of background noise.

Yes, adding some noise to mitigate the differences can help, but only so much.

Without knowing the logistical particulars, it’s difficult to say if that would work.

If I were you, I’d use a simple DAW software like Pro Tools LE put the track on a timeline, cut out the parts you don’t need and export the entire remaining timeline of parts you want.

High quality headset or Ear mics like the Countryman E6 work better than boom mics in noisy or reflective environments because the mic element is inches from the mouth. Put the E6 along the cheek.

The E6 is the same element a the B6 lav. A high quality lav.

NEVER in front of the mouth unless it’s one of those clunky telex intercom headsets.

With all due respect, Stuart, I’ve yet to hear a cure for bad micing that isn’t as bad as the disease.
That includes the $6K GML noise reduction hardware made for Disney. It was able to do “something”, but everything else falls into the first category.

Is this something that wold be considered normal in the US,and that every sound person should be able to supply.Another poster said it couldnt be done when he tried.. I dont want to be the grumpy guy..but work conditions are generally getting worse ie 6 day shoots becoming 4 days.. that Iam not really sure I want extra futzzing around with more cables/gear than needed. to save the prod co a few more bucks 🙂

That was my suggestion. TC is nasty and may bleed in your mixer. Try it and see.
