Even now, scanning for open frequencies with devices onboard wireless receivers are not as “smart” as they need to be. I wish ’em a lot of luck with that. What’s supposed to happen when you work in multiple towns? I just can’t see that working very well either.

Hello Ian and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,

The spec sheet for that unit doesn’t say the two XLR inputs either offer phantom power or operate at mic level. So I’m guessing you would be unhappy with the combination.

My first career (17 years) was as an announcer/production director/Ops Manager in Baltimore and Washington. It was more fun back then, but you might still like it. I wouldn’t unless they let me program my own show.

Hi Peter,

When the various parts of the spectrum DO get auctioned, the winner will own the rights to that part of the spectrum and you will be trespassing if you fire up a wireless.

Getting caught may be difficult. I may be wrong, but I don’t think the FCC has the person power to ride herd on the spectrum. If you are in a fixed position, e.g. church, theater, club, you will be an easy target for the FCC. If you’re doing ENG and EFP for just a few hours at a time, you’ll be a more difficult target

Depending on how the spectrum is used (wall to wall signal or sporadic sections), or if the spectrum is used in your geographical area, your wireless may work, may suffer reduced range outside if it has range at all.

1. We are shooting on the Red One camera and I’m trying to decide between requesting Data DVDs from production sound or if I should ask the Red Tech to backup the audio files onto the two on-set hard drives that are being used for the R3D storage/backup. Since everything is going to end up on the editing drive anyway this would help streamline the process (and also allow on-set syncing of sound for playback-if audio and picture are recorded separately).

2. In regards to dual-system sound, I’m not sure how common it is to connect a wireless receiver to the Red One camera in order to record a mono mixed track with the picture? There are a lot of steadicam shots so having the audio recorder directly connected to the camera isn’t always going to be an option. (I’ve posted this question on the Red Network.)

3. If this dual-system method is NOT standard practice I imagine the other option is to record the mono mixed track and iso tracks on the audio recorder and sync everything in post using the timecode/slate.
