Does this camera have XLR inputs? “When hooked up to the camera”, when what is hooked up to the camera?
If the camera has XLR inputs, I don’t think it’s bias voltage. I’ve only seen bias voltage on 1/8″ audio inputs. I have seen phantom power cause problems when it’s on at the camera and the camera is being fed by a mixer instead of a mic requiring phantom power.
If you’re trying to feed the camera from a mixer, be sure the camera phantom supply is off.

While the comments concerning using the line level inputs on the PD170 are inviting and correct, my questions is how are you feeding line level into mic level without overdriving the input of the camera?

I thought I had heard that using the edge track was chancy in case the tape was not tracking properlu and got chewed a bit.

Use the Mix To Disk to render out the audio as a stereo wav. or aiff file.
I don’t know exactly what you mean by putting the audio on a DVD, so I can’t help you with that.
Do you mean to combine it with video and make it part of a video soundtrack?

I’m thinking LTC and VITC. The LTC track runs longitudinally along the edge of the tape. VITC is part of the video stream. So, to answer your question, I think VITC is what you’d want.

Most of the better mixers have a jack for the headphone return. You plug that in from the snake. There’s a switch on the mixer that lets you listen to the mixer output or the headphone return. That’s the best way.
