Schoeps cmc641. You can see the pop filter sitting on the sofa arm. For that shot it was Schoeps to Sound Devices 442 mixer to Canon XL2 camera to my Mac Titaniun laptop into either Quicktime Pro or Final Cut Express. Audio stripped off and tweeked in Pro Tools LE and then replaced.

Here’s one I did with a TLM103 because the guitar was a little dark sounding. It’s pretty much the same everything else but I did the post in FCP. (I don’t like the GUI for audio in FCP, but am getting used to getting pretty close to what I want with it.

I emailed the author about it yesterday, given it’s age. He said there had been some changes and that he might revisit the issue.

About the audio video thing. RED was so far off base it was silly.
Getting audio right isn’t that hard, but the big guys managed to screw up HDV by making the audio mpeg. Go figure.

Apart of the quality of the stuff you put in your sequence, in short this will depends a lot of the codec you use on exporting and the kind of rendering.

Think of a codec like a container. if you are adding elements to your original material, you need room to accommodate them.

About Rendering, FC do not offer many options, but you must be aware of few things that can improve your rendering.

I would recommend you to work in a sequence with whatever codec makes your editing easy.

Then when you are ready to export, in your Sequence Setting set ProRess or 10b Uncompress.

Set “Render all YUV Material in High Precission YUV”. This will make the rendering in 32b Floating Point. Set as well “Render Motion effets: BEST”. this should help with any Animation, resizing, cropping etc.

All this should help to get a good 10b master. from there you can go to a web video, DVD, tape, etc.

As I was saying, the RED people have shown themselves to be relatively clueless and unconcerned about audio. Before you work with a red camera, please do yourself a favor and check this link out.

If Sony, Panasonic, Ikegami or JVC came out with a camera with this many problems, they’d be the laughing stock of the industry.

Considering how grossly unobservant the people at RED have been about ANY audio issues, this would be a help. Before you nail down YOUR standard, however, it would be nice to know what their pinouts are at the moment.

Yes the default was set at 4. Why would anyone want a 4 frame offset?

Is there a good way to allow the audio and/or video to be adjusted more finely against each other in the timeline? Having shifted to 0 frame offset, will my video as seen on my apple monitor be more in sync?

I’m relatively new to the technical aspects of video but learning quickly. Is there a book or video that’s a easily absorbable source for this sort of info?

For example, there are other buttons you were kind enough to forward and there are many tabs of boxes to click. I’m OK on the audio stuff, but the FCP video stuff can be overwhelming. I do have the manuals, but find they generally provoke questions they don’t answer. Have I overlooked one of the manuals?

Editing problems and noise problems are different, D.

I guess most of us here do what we can to make things sound better. I just did yesterday with an interview clip done near the Bosporus Strait. I have no clue where the mic was, maybe on the camera. Had it been an internal shot the noise would have been about early room reflections. Because the scene was shot outside, I was able to use Izotope’s RX within FCP to pull the voice up from the background noise.
