If you client will not listen to reason (and science) Richard’s advice to run away quickly is spot on. Your client will only be unhappy and that will be transferred to you and he will likely say bad things about your competence to others when, in fact, the problem is his own ignorance.

Your talent should not be in charge of your equipment decisions.
You are asking for 30 inches, with a soft voice. The normal distance for someone with a regular voice is 12 to 18 inches.
You can always have him buy the wrong mic, prove to him that it doesn’t work and then buy the right one.
I repeat; something like a Countryman E6 on your talent will work.
Why does he not want the ear-worn mic?

No. A Boundary mic at that distance will not help you. Is there a PA system in the room that amplifies his voice?

Hey Al,
My E6 are all omni. The directional version may be useful in extreme noise situations, or when you also have that mic running through a very loud and nearby PA system that’s also amplifying the voice, but because the mic element is so close to your mouth, the voice level is usually relatively a lot higher over the noise floor. You can back off the mic preamp and stay away from feedback.
