It depends on whether the audio input on the 5D Mk IV is mono or stereo. If you get the wrong cable, you’ll have problems. You might need a special cable that spreads the mono output of the mic across both camera inputs. This one should work: https://bhpho.to/2Fh65qa

Also, the work I’ve done on a Mk III tells me that you don’t want to increase the MK III input gain past one dot on the screen. If you do, the noise will increase dramatically. In that position, the camera may not get sufficient level. The best advice is to put the NTG 4+ though a mixer, set the camera input for the first gain dot and fill up the level with mixer output.

Very helpful. I’m beginning to think I may have just needed a restart. My subsequent burns went without problems.

With background turned on, when I tried to export a session, I got a widow that said there was something going on that had to finish before I could export. There was the dotted line above the timeline, so I figured the system was rendsering the timecode windows and needed time to do that first.

Later, I did a couple of things including turning off background and restarting and things got better.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

First, let me ask another question. This is a list of clips, all of which need a TOD Source time code burn.
After assembling them and dropping in the timecode window, I coudn’t export the session until all of the timecome windows were burned. The total length of clips was over an hour, so it took some time. A friend who uses Premiere, said he doesn’t have to wait for that render. Should I have background render enabled?

My client brought me two drives. One with the source clips, and a delivery drive. I think the rendering problem may have more to do with me trying to put the .fcp file on the source clip drive, doing the edit and trying to export to the delivery drive to save space. I tried moving things back and last night was able to render from my drive to his source clips drive.

I’m running a 2018 iMac with SSD. It’s pretty fast, but I needed more I/Os so I got a OWC thunderbolt 3 Dock. I think I had his drives connected to the Dock and the Dock connected to the iMac. The success I got happened after I connected more directly to the iMac. We have another such project to do today, so maybe I’ll have more intel. My take is that the OWC Dock is part of the problem. I’ve had things get weird when using it before.

Yep and it worked perfectly on my FCP X 10.4.8.

My client has a client who wants to identify in/outs to make judgements on which to use, so source code is essential. Camera was shooting TOD.

I was looking in the upper left hand corner of the FCP window.

Look in the lower right and make sure you’re looking at EFFECTS. Drag and drop the timecode effect to the clip or clips. Choose “source” if that’s what you want. Change the position, size, type, color, background color, etc.

I can now look like I know what I’m doing!

I think you can use Wave Agent, but there a bit of mucking about in your Mac Security and Privacy panel to let it happen. I’ve forgotten exact;ly where to spread the fairy dust, but Wave Agent works fine here on my Mac. Will it help you in this situation? I don’t know.

Hello Mark and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Have you tried looking at the files with Sound Devices Wave Agent? Here’s a link: https://www.sounddevices.com/product/wave-agent-software/

Audacity, a free app also has a RAW import function. You can switch sample rates and mono/stereo on the fly after you get the file on the timeline to make it play properly.

Going forward. The only time I’ve had problems with a file is when I failed to use a newly cleaned and formatted SD card.
Yeah, I know it’s an extra step of two, but less of a pain in the butt. ☺
