Hi Craig,

“Barely Cracking” – adjusting the audio input on the 5D mk iii to one click up from the lowest possible setting. We fed that from the line output of the DR-60D and since that output is adjustable, we set our record levels by adjusting gain there.

I don’t know if a 302 (or any standard mixer) would work as well. They have more or less fixed output levels. Yes you can change them, but then I think you have changed the overall headroom of the mixer.

Worth trying if you have a 302 and 5D Mk ii to play with. The audio on the mk ii is not as good.

it eats batteries pretty quickly, but does a lot and that variable output level to feed the 5D is VERY useful.

Hello Corbin, HNY and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

The Canon 5D Mk iii is capable of recording acceptable 48kHz 16-bit audio. I tried it with a friend’s camera last year and was OK with the results.

We were feeding the 5D from a TASCAM DR-60D line out and barely cracked the 5D input. When we did the result was noisier. So careful gain staging has to be observed.

What camera do you have?

Hi Ben and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

For truly professional results, your Rode will likely disappoint you. Live music is a beast. Typically the best you can do is take a mix from the console on one track and a mic placed in a part of the room that sounds good.

Then in post production you time align the two tracks (usually by shifting the mic audio to the right until the two waveforms line up). Moving a camera and mic around changes the time difference because the camera is closer then farther away from the sound source. You need both because the true sound of a band is partly what comes through the PA and partly what sound comes from the amps and drums.

For future reference, most car scenes, if they are shot on location, are shot with the car in question hauled up on a process trailer and pulled by a tow truck.

They do this so the car’s engine isn’t running so there’s less noise and because they rig pipes on which to mount cameras.

Hi Jasmine,

Without hearing the actual track, it’s difficult to say. Traffic noise is seldom constant. BEcause of that, it’s not a likely candidate for automated noise reduction. There are third party plugins like RX that canbe used to get to specific offending sounds, but it’s a more detailed process.

Some Pro Tools systems have a plugin called NR (Noise Reduction). It may or may not help. Can’t say from here. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease, meaning that the results don’t sound very natural.

That white noise isn’t from opening a window unless you were three feet from Niagra Falls.

Did you hear this noise when you were recording? Sounds to me like a file corruption or some weird file transfer problem. Put the media back in the camera it was shot on and playback. See if the noise is still there.
