Could you use Adobe Bridge to import the project into AE and export an EXR from there?

Just a hint that may help,

Whilst you can’t go faster than 99fps, you can set keyframes at sub-frame times using the curve editor. So you could theoretically make something flicker at 240fps by keyframing the value 10 times within each frame. Similarly, you could do it with expressions as the value t equals seconds – so 0.0416 is one frame (@24fps), and 0.00416 would be 1/10th of a frame and so on.

One thing to remember is that when working at sub-frame scales, you have to be mindful of the comp’s shutter angle and phase, as well as the number of motion blur samples you’re working with. Just like how a strobe light that is in sync with a camera shutter appears constantly on, if your sub-frame flickering is in sync with the number of motion samples per frame (taking the shutter settings into account) you’re not going to get the effect you might have been aiming for.

Having said all that, you could just make a comp that was 24fps, do all your animation at 1/10th speed and then precomp it and speed it up 1000%

    Thanks Roland,

I actually only just upgraded to 10.0.2 – that may be where the trouble started. Didn’t happen before the update, but I couldn’t tell you what number my previous version was. Something old like 10.0.0.0.0.0.-5 or whatever.

There are plenty of solutions, but I noticed it because I’ve picked up an old project with about a million precomps and a squillion grids and I’d rather not have to go through and change each one.

Surprised more people haven’t noticed it.

Brilliant! Didn’t think to do that, it seems to have done the trick.

Changed the motion blur samples from 24 to 16. Initially that didn’t do anything, but when I shifted the shutter phase to 90 deg the issue went away.

Not sure why it worked that time, or why the shutter phase or the motion blur settings should have any effect on the shadow opacity, but whatever… it worked.

    Thanks for the hint.

    Thanks Shahin,

I’ve always had OpenGL disabled but I might play around with it and see if it makes any difference. Thanks for the hint.

Okay, so the problem turned out to be more complicated than that.

It actually came from a missing font used in a text layer – but only when it was being used as an alpha matte, and only when the footage layer using it as a mask had any filters applied to it.

Downright weird if you ask me, but there you go.

Okay, so I appear to have found the culprit.

Bizarrely, it had nothing to do with Layer 5 or Particular. It was the Fill effect on one of the layers (a video layer), which I only discovered through process of elimination.

Does anyone know why the Fill layer would be causing so much trouble? The only thing I can think of is that it’s something to do with the project being in 16bpc and the Fill Effect only supporting 8bpc.

    Any ideas?

My recommendation would be to use Card Dance with the logo as a displacement map. There are a few tuts on using Card Dance, they don’t give the exact effect your looking for, but they should teach you enough to work out how to do it yourself.

    Try

Also, not in english, but a good one to watch:

    Hope that helps.

Thanks to everyone who helped out on this issue.

In the end, the solution turned out to be (drumroll……)

Ignore it and it’ll go away.

Basically, I avoided the cut-paste action by just typing the text in. Since then, everything’s been smooth sailing. I brought up an older version of the project to see if it still happens and oddly enough I can’t seem to reproduce the problem. Whatever it was, it appears it simply can’t be bothered to bug me anymore.

Sometimes I wish all problems were like that.

Are you sure its not auto saving because its crashing?

Yeah, because it autosaves to the autosave folder, then crashes, then saves a “_1” version to the main folder. The “_1” version saves fine but does not include the pasted text. The autosaved version, however, is corrupted and doesn’t open.

Trashing prefs was the first thing I tried, but it didn’t seem to do much. The formatting idea was a good one, but looking at the text, it doesn’t seem to have any fancy formatting in it. I will check out that program, tho.

And yes, CS4 for Mac does seem to be buggier than CS3, but up/downgrading isn’t on the cards right now.
