I’ve heard great things about the 3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” MacPro. Less money than the 8 or 12-core and actually faster at a lot of things since the base GHz is faster which is important for Final Cut as it’s still a 32-bit app and can’t access all your cores anyway. And you can use the money saved on more RAM and drives.

No problemo. So glad to hear you figured it out on your own. And thanks for telling us what you did.

Try this:
– Open up Log and Capture, go to Clip Settings and make sure you have Channels 1,2,3 & 4 selected and whether you want them mono or stereo.
– Then got to Capture Settings and make sure you have them the way you want.
– Close the Log and Capture window.
– Select all the clips you want to recapture in the browser, right-click and select “Batch Capture”.
– With the “Batch Capture” window open, Deselect the Option “Use Logged Clip Setting”. This will force Final Cut to use the settings that you just set-up instead of the original ones. You can see the settings update below and if you did it right you will notice that the info at the bottom now says you are Capturing Video and 4 channels of audio.

[Isa Jacobson] “I am backing up on Time Machine so you’re right – no need to really be concerned. But am not going to bother unless someone has tried it and it works.”
I’d advise you look into a bootable clone backup software so that you can easily switch to the backup in case of an emergency. Time Machine does not make a bootable clone copy of your HD so you would have to restore it to your drive before you could be up and running again, and that is time wasted. Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper are two good bootable clone making software choices.

Ok. Let us know if the driver fixes it. Also, try deleting your Final Cut preferences and cache. I’ve also seen this issue when one of the PCI cards got loose in my box so that could be something to check, too.

February 10, 2011 at 4:21 pm in reply to: Is FCP ever going to sort out the “large project file” crash problem?I’ve talked to Apple a few times over the past couple years, along with AJA and some other hardware manufacturers and have gotten mostly the same answers that are already in this post: Long GOP and Final Cut still has issues, turn off thumbnails, convert to ProRes, update to latest drivers of everything, hold breath and hop on one foot. And I agree with some that it seems worse with Snow Leopard than Leopard.

Are you running the latest Intensity Pro drivers? Does your Video Output settings match your sequence settings? Does your sequence settings match your clips’ settings? Have you deleted your Final Cut preferences?
Try the AJA System Test (https://www.aja.com/products/software/) and see if your RAID is having trouble reading and writing to the drive.

I agree with Peter. Could also look to make sure you have the latest version of the plug-in installed.

[Paul Jay] “Options for selected services ->> choose All your cores”
There is a lot of debate about the best combination of settings for QMaster and the specific Mac you have. The fastest settings I’ve seen for MacPro’s are:
4-Core – Options for selected services – choose 3 cores
8 and 12-Core – Options for selected services – choose 6 cores. Also if you can, make sure you install RAM in sets of 3: for a 4-Core system install 3 RAM chips and not 4, and on the 8 and 12-core systems install 6, 3 in one chassis and 3 in the other.
The newer intel architecture for the MacPros uses a 3-channel memory system and this helps you get the fastest throughput for RAM and speeds up mulit-core operations like QMaster with Compressor.
And remember, QMaster is like a bittersweet love, sometimes it works great and sometimes you can’t get it to do anything. If this happens, try restarting as that fixes a lot of weird QMaster issues. But look the forums and you’ll see quite a bit of problems.
