Ok, the line-in is stereo and I thought the mic-in was stereo because the control panel let me choose the channel. I can test it further. But I was wondering why Ty asked the question–does this affect the hissing sound somehow?

I googled this topic not long ago and found pictures of it mounted a generic looking shock mount. I believe B+H has a video on their website showing it used this way, but when I went there they couldn’t help. I wasn’t persistent because I was contemplating returning my H1, and I did end up returning it for a couple of reasons, including that the one I had went through batteries like crazy (known defect that affected some of them), and I realized that I do not want a stereo mic. And mostly, I did not want to have to sync in post unless I’m doing a big production with multiple (XLR) mics which the H1 cannot handle. I find that as long as I disable the AGC in my camera, I get good results with an external mic plugged in to the camera. Also, the tripod mount on the H1 is pretty bad. It’s plastic (!!!) and my tripod would not go in properly. I did not force it because I knew I was returning it. But it is very light and very portable. I am sure it would make great recordings in the right hands.

The computer has two inputs: Line-in and Mic-in. They are both stereo.
The XLR to 1/8″ adapter I am using is dual-channel mono: it routes the mic to both channels equally.

I find the voltage thing pretty confusing. A 1.5 volt battery can take the place of 48 volt power? (I am actually using a rechargeable battery, which is 1.2 volt rather than 1.5 volt).

The mic has a battery. I thought it runs on either the battery or the phantom power equally. No?

I was watching a training video on lynda.com called Digital Audio Principles by Dave Schroeder where he refers to the stereo 1/8″ mini plugs as “TRS” and “balanced”, and the mono versions as unbalanced. So I am confused by what he was trying to get at.

My computer has a line out as well as a headphone output.
I’m using Sennheiser HD280Pro headphones (64 impedance).
I assume the headphone output is the way to go? It sounds pretty good.
Are there any reference sound files that I can listen to to determine whether my the sound is being conducted optimally?
