What tape format did you record in?
Betacam, DV, digi beta, dvcpro? What was the camera model you used in the field?
Have you confirmed that it was the field recorder which caused the problem or is there a chance your playback vtr has damaged the tapes?
Items to check on your playback vtr
1)Manually clean the playback vtr heads and tape path using 98% alcohol and head cleaning cloth.
2)Make sure the pitch roller is not shiny if it is this may indicated need to replace itYou must confirm where the problem occurred during recording or upon playback to avoid future damage to tapes.

Bob,
Sony did introduce at NAB 2005 a digi beta camcorder that does do 24P.
I think the model number is dvw930 or 970 not sure on this and not sure if the model has been released yet.
Anyway it is Sony’s answer to the SDX900 but at a much higher price for those who must have digi beta.

Rich I can do all that all while talking on the phone with my headset, cooking my tuna fish sandwich with my left hand, taking notes with my right hand, typing on the fcp keyboard with my right toe, using my left foot with a foot pedal mouse, backing up all my harddrives to my raid, dvd’s, cd’s, iomega discs, usb jump drive, and even an outdated 3.5″ floppy.
And top it all off while watching and listening to CNN on the latest news on Aruba, Iraq, the White House and what latest Internet worm Microsoft is responsible for.
All this only possible on the mac cause I ain’t got no virus.

No need for more hardware if you don’t have a person who understand how to deal and operate the gear correctly. The AJA IO box is broadcast quality so there should be no need for another card such as the decklink.
Please invest in hiring a qualified video engineer to assist and consult you with your problems.
Most likely your timecode problems have to do with LTC and VITC non matching tc. An easy solution is to turn off the VITC record switch on the vtr which means your master will only have LTC tc recorded. This is a down and dirty way to avoid non matching VITC code but it may not comply with a broadcasters standards to have VITC TC on all masters delivered.
In order to have matching VITC and LTC code you must have the vtr tc regen switch on since the VITC will jam sync the tc again as you reinsert video. VITC is embedded as part of the video signal.
What betacam sp deck model are you using?
What black burst generator brand and model are you using? Is the IO locked to the black burst generator too?Where is your vtr capstan lock switch set to 2fld, 2/4fld, 4 fld? Did you black and code the tapes in advance if so where was the capstan lock switch set to when you black and coded the tapes?
Have you tried do a crash record or assemble edit? Your vtr may not be able to perform accurate insert edits depending on which model it is.

3200K is the standard for setting up the camera especially if you are adjusting the presets white balance settings. Use tungsen lighting although some engineers use kinoflos with tungsen bulbs.
Set Iris so that peak whites on the chart are at 700 millvolts or 100% depending on how you have set the waveform display set. I do not open the iris WFO or use the long end of the lens when setting up cameras.
Make sure you are using a color critical properly calibrated HD monitor as a reference when setting up cameras or else all your work is invalid.

FCP is also used alot by major theatrical trailer editorial houses here in LA. I did a video for Apple (FCP 3) in which we profiled one high end trailer house that dumped all their Avid systems and replaced them with FCP stations.

A better question to ask can any other manufacturer match or beat the technical support AJA can and does provide to their clients and end users?
Based on my personal experience the answer is no. AJA has the best technical support in the business as well as dependable products.
I have nothing but kind words of support and thanks for everyone at AJA (John, Rudy, Clark,Ted and all the others who make the company what it is).
In my opinion purchasing a AJA product is an investment that matures in time and regardless of what happens in the future you will always be able to rely on the company for support.

I am using the AJA A-D and flying cow converters for my analog needs currently but I have decided that the IO LA would be more ideal. Primarily because I want to use it with a powerbook for in the field work as well as streamlining working with the K2. Regarding the SDI card I purchased two for my 20L5/1 and 14L5/1 monitors used. I was able to get two SDI cards for the price of one. The price of one used SDI card was nearly 1/10th the price of a full blown IO.
I personally did not think your post had anything to do about budget concerns rather it was a quest to make a proper investment decision based on your current client needs.

The purpose of the I/O LA and LD were for either analog only in out to firewire or SDI in and out to firewire only applications.
If you require both then the larger IO with both analog, SDI in and outs is more suitable.
If you can’t afford the larger IO my recommendations would be to add a SDI card to your monitor and use the K2 analog outputs to feed the betacam deck.
Or get a component video DA to feed the multiple component analog sources.
