One major factor to consider is your actual cost of living in a specific market.
That will ultimately decide how much you really need to make to stay alive, eat, and sleep in your house not a homeless shelter running around with a powerbook in your backpack.
The larger the market the higher the real estate, food, cost of gas etc which results in higher pay.
Smaller markets will get less cause homes don’t cost 700K to one million like in LA.Tony Salgado

you hit it right on the nail. One good reason why their are different color matrix settings in video cameras which correspond to specific markets in the world.
For example:
EBU which the Europeans like to use is rather dull but realistic in terms of real world color.
ITU 709 is quite punchy and at times too colorful for my taste.Another item to consider if the climate conditions in different part of the world will effect the viewer perception of color etc based on the typical color temp in that part of the world which has an impact on viewing conditions on an average household tv overseas.

When do you sleep? Durint that time period do the encoding since you are not actively working at your mac.
Unless or course you are into sleep editing via FCP.

I highly suggest before you start messing with any internal menu’s eventually leading to a “digital mess” that yourself and crew obtain some hard core advance time with the camera or any video camera to understand the basic video 101 procedures on how to work with a video camera.
Learn how to properly mount and secure the camera onto the quick release camera plate. Learn how to calibrate the electronic viewfinder for proper display and viewing for your specific needs. Learn where all the switches are and what they do. Learn how to load and eject the tape correctly, how to rewind and playback the footage, how to “write protect” the tape(s) thereby avoiding any chance of erasing the tapes.
If you do not make it your responsibility to learn the basic handling and operation of the camera in advance of your shoot your will be setting yourself up for failure in the field. The most important part of your educational process needs to be understanding “those who plan in advance are planning for success those who do not plan at all plan for failure”.
On the set fumbling around can lead to dangerous results or damage to the camera if you do not understand the core basics of operating the camera.
It does not matter if it is a Varicam, F900 or Viper as some of the most basic fundamental operational and care of the camera apply to all.I wish you the best of luck on your shoot.

If you can’t afford the Teranex another option to uprez on the fly to HD is using the 1200A vtr internal upconverter for the recapture via HDSDI into a Kona 2.
However if drive space is going to be a problem working in HD you may also consider recapturing at standard def 8 bit or 10 bit.
If you do the blowup of any images in FCP do not use FCP 4.5 as FCP 5 has been greatly improved in terms of scaling images.

Ben,
Check the following items:
1) in FCP under the view menu is audio scrubbing check on or off? You should have a checkmark next to audio scrubbing to enable audio output during scrubbing or else it will be muted.
2) In system preferences under sound where is the output set to?
3) In FCP under the view menu what is audio playback set to- audio follow video or other and what audio device is the audio being routed to Kona 2?
4)Under FCP user preferences how many tracks do you have set for the real time audio mixing setting?Good luck,

I can’t believe you would have allowed the camera out of your hands without putting the camera into an ATA shipping case to protect the camera instead of praying it would survive “Naked” in the cargo hold.
I personally always carry a hard case as a backup everywhere I travel in the event I need to ship the camera instead of carrying the camera onboard.
If I had been in your shoes I would have either taken the camera and EVF apart and stashing it under a seat or leave the plane and wait for the next flight. The only time I ever had my camera taken from me was the time I personally had to stuff the camera into a suit closet on the plane and surrounding it with pillows. The camera secured inside a porta brace case survived but then again this was back in the days when betacam sp cameras were built like bricks and weighted alot but they survived a hell of alot of abuse.
I highly doubt the airline will pay up in any reasonable amount of time that will minimize your downtime and out of pocket expenses for the EVF repair but I wish you the best of luck.

One suggestion would be seeking out available courses on FCP in your area which can quickly get you up to speed on the advanced features and techniques FCP offers.
NLE editing classes are one of the most powerful methods to master any new software/hardware system. Without the proper educational background you will waste thousands of hours pulling your hair out wondering why,how and when will you figure out the mess you are in.
Even if you have to pay for the courses yourself the knowledge gained will make your services that much more valuable and in demand.
It is all up to you to seek out the knowledge you need to commit to the work you are expected to perform.

First I think you need to beg forgiveness from your elder for being to quick to rush to judgement about his technical advice. Digital unlike analog does not have anywhere near the same headroom.
From what you describe somewhere in the signal flow chain (most likely out of the dvcam deck to the Mackie mixer) you are no longer at unity reference which results in analog levels being too low on the betacam deck.
I suggest the following plan to make your life simple which is to go back to your senior citizen editor and beg him to instruct you on how to properly establish unity reference throughout the entire signal flow.
Once a unity reference level is established whether it be digital or analog what was recorded will be played backed at the same levels as the original.
One last item ask him to explain the differences between VU meters and peak meters. The latter will reveal alot of the mystery you are experiencing.
