But also to chime in – you aren’t selling anything, you are marking up the creative output of someone else. Once your clients find out who is shooting and editing their footage, you can kiss them goodbye. In challenging times, design agencies lose clients to production firms for producing content because they don’t like seeing a 40% markup for answering a phone and booking a job.
Also – property videos pay terribly and disappear like a fart in the wind. Make sure you get paid up front before your (sub contracted)cameraman arrives to film something.
Edited to add – we were once offered £150 to drive a 170 mile round trip and film some property. The estate agency thought that it would only take 1hr and why should they pay for travel. I laughed. They didn’t.

Just a curious thought Alex – do you think that FCPX “slowly but surely will work its way into the edit suites of higher-end video creators in the same way the original FCP did?
From reading some of the comments from a lot of content creators, it seems that many are pretty annoyed at apple and have gone as far to purchase windows machines instead.
Wasn’t the marketplace that FCP entered a very different one, at a very different time? If apple are losing customers to avid and adobe at the moment, once adobe continues to improve a piece of software that is already better than FCPX, it would be a big ask for people to move back….Apple won people over with FCP by releasing a superior product to a marketplace that was saturated with their hardware. Next time around, will there be as many Mac Pro suites with Mac OS on?
Just some thoughts though – don’t think that I am knocking you or your opinions. I find it fascinating what apple has done in the last year, and I am really looking forward to seeing what adobe and avid do to try and wrestle control of the creative markets.iI even wonder if adobe might start partnering with a hardware supplier…

We get these sort of issues all the freakin’ time.
I now refuse to bid/quote/tender/lick finger and stick in the air for ANY local government contracts unless we have been asked to.
It’s a waste of time. They either know someone who has helped them write the brief and then feel obliged/want to use them for the job anyway, or they have literally NO clue as to what they are buying. It might as well be a sack of apples.
Most local government staff in England don’t have any commercial experience – they will go with the lowest quote, and then if they save money they get a pat on the back from the boss and if the company can’t do it, it’s passed to the legal team. Very few will understand just how labour intensive it is to complete a tender response.
However, in this case, I would be inclined to kick up a big stink about the brief being written so favourably towards one company.

The only thing I haven’t understood is your use of the word “everything”. If there is no contract, and no verbal agreement of what they own then surely you still own all of the rushes…
In which case, I would give them what they ask and try to find out what the intended use is. Questions will only help you!

Hi Rob,
We haven’t joined 3 cables, but due to the logistics of running cables under flooring and through guttering at trade shows we have used one loom with 12 I/O and then connected cameras locally with shorter runs (control room being at least 250ft run with the loom).
Didn’t have any noticeable dropout or signal loss – this was using the output from XLH1’s, via matrix switchers, to watchout, to 4 video walls for live camera feed.

Build a cheap PC, use a Matrox Triplehead 2 Go Graphics card with 3 DVI outputs to your projectors.
This will give the cheapest sync of your content at HD, but won’t give you any options for mapping or edge-blending your projectors.

I would have had to bite my tongue for a long time after hearing that.
It surely must be too tempting to email him back after watching his footage and tell him it is awful and needs re-shooting by someone who knows what they are doing….
