Walter-a quick question.
Is there a way to capture Sony HDCam footage shot at 23.98psf @1080i for editing on a 23.98 timeline within FCP using the DVCPro-100 format captured thru the Kona 3?
Is there a preset for this or do I need to make a custome setup?
I don’t see a 1080/23.98 DVC100 option for this.

BTW, the Compressor test was not for actual use, but to simply look at what DVCPro 100 might look like when compared to the original 10bit 1080i footage. I ended up with a kind of funky looking Pulldown/field artifact on the converted footage since I couldn’t find a direct match for the framerate.

One more question?
Since the original footage will be shot at 23.98fps 1080i resolution and edited on a 23.98fps timeline, what would be the best DVC-100 Compressor setting for this? It doesn’t look like there is a setting that will match the original footage exactlly. Drop down to 720p at 24fps?
I usually edit on a 23.98 timeline and go out to SD thru the Kona 3 to Digibeta. Would it pay to bring it into a 29.97 timeline and add the pulldown upon ingest?

I’ll try the export via Compressor and reimport to FCP to see what it looks like compared to the orignal clip. I still have the clips from the last project in the system and will give it a try with one of them.
I suspect that DVC-100 will look just fine for this and take up MUCH less space on the drives as well.

River Rock Studios has a plug named “Jitterbug”. It’s kinds funky, especially on text. There is also a plug named “jiggle” but I don’t remember exactly where I got it from. I have it on the machine at home and I do remember it was a free download.

I’ve been running a Dell 2407 LCD monitor as an HD client monitor for a few months now with generally good results. I drive it with an Aja HDP HDSDI to DVI converter which is driven by one of the HDSDI outputs from a Kona3 card. Although the motion looks a little soft (a little lag-gy), the resolution is pretty good and gives the clients a chance to see their footage in HD while in the edit room. My HD edit setup is currently in a smallish room awaiting renovation of our last tape to tape online room that was gutted a while ago. I literally don’t have the space for a larger CRT type monitor in the edit room at this time. I do use a smaller Sony broadcast monitor driven by the analog component outputs of the Kona card for color grading however.
It all works and everyone is happy until the buildout if finished on the new room. I’m also the engineering guy here and I’ve been so swamped with editing that I haven’t had the time to finish the design/layout of the new edit suite yet. What can I say? I am my own worst enemy.

Got it to work. Thank you. I had to go into the Kona control panel and select “secondary video” for SDI output#2. It works great. SDI output#1 is driving an Aja HDSDI to DVI converter which in turn drives a Dell 24″ client monitor. I was just monitoring the wrong output. Oops.

The problem is that I am attempting to play out of Final Cut thru the Kona 3 board. When FCP is selected as active it will override the Kona control panel settings. Is there a way to play SD out from FCP and do the letterbox conversion in real time?

By the way, running FCP 5.1.2 on a Quad G5 with a Kona 3 board. Trying to playback an anamorphic FCP SD sequence out thru the Kona 3 and have it letterboxed in SD out via SI to a Digibeta deck.
