    I’ve discovered a lovely quirk.

    So, for my workflow, what I’ve begun doing is dragging the audio clips to an empty track, then stretching the head and tail. This ensures I can find a sample to use for noise reduction. I then control-click, Edit in Audition. I do the cleanup, save, then in Premiere trim the head and tail back to where they were and move the clip back into place.

    Here’s the rub, though…

    If I control-click and revert the audio to the original (maybe I was a little heavy-handed on the noise reduction), it moves the In point to wherever I stretched the clip pre-Audition, throwing the audio completely out of sync.

    Imagine that the original audio file is 30 seconds long. The piece I used in the project was a clip that began at :15 and ended at :20. Before moving it to Audition, I stretched the In and Out so that the clip now runs from :10 to :25. I clean it in Audition, return to Premiere, then trim those extra seconds from the head and tail, and have the original length back, cleaned and synchronized.

    But when I revert it to the non-edited clip, the In point shifts from :15 to :10, and the Out from :20 to :15. It keeps the same duration, but plays a different segment of the original file.

    I’ve done a bit of digging, and found a couple of tweaks. I’m on a Mac, so the ASIO driver isn’t applicable.

    I just don’t understand how I can buy a $400 multitrack recorder that can do this simple task with no perceptible latency, but my 21st century computer, with more computing power than the entire 20th century combined, can’t accomplish the same thing. Now, my iMac is 3 years old, but it was the best that money could buy three years ago. 32 GB RAM, 3.2 GHz Intel Core I5, current Adobe, OS 10.12

    I’ve done a lot of Googling about “multitrack latency Audition,” and most of the results are non-helpful. I keep getting the same three results:
    -reduce buffer size
    -use ASIO drivers
    -use an external interface

    I’ve tried the two that are applicable, and while it does reduce the latency, it doesn’t get it down to the imperceptible range.

    It just seems like something that shouldn’t be an issue. Heck, acknowledging that latency exists, the machine should be able to offset that automatically.

    At the moment, it’s a proof of concept.

    I think it would play well in VR, but that’s a few projects down the way.

    [Cody Walters] “What is the purpose of your shot and how are you using it? A 10 minute shot sure is long and I’m curious why.”

    The purpose is for the viewer to assume the role of the victim. You have lost, and are treated to a gloating antagonist as you slowly sink from sight. 10 minutes was an initial estimate; readthrus put the actual time closer to 7:30.

    The wide angle isn’t really an option in this case; the point is for this to look as subjectively realistic as possible.

    The idea of a slider is intriguing; just stand it on end and use it as an elevator? It might take out a little of the wiggle that the jib introduces. I may be able to use that as a justification for a future purchase!

    “A complicated system of winches and pulleys” sounds more professional than “the Contraption” to be sure!

    As far as displaying the video, I clicked the button that said “file upload” and followed the prompts. How would one go about doing as you describe? My foruming skills are rather basic, I’m afraid.

    Approximately 4 months later, here it is!

    Yep, those are 16mm reels. Turns out 16mm spindles are made to last!

    Rope, pulleys, sawhorse, and assorted bits of hardware from City Mill.

    Aloha Jim,

    There’s not much I can tell you. I ended up migrating to the Adobe family of products. I did have a former student come and do some editing using FCP on 10.9 recently, and that seemed to go well.

    I have authored a couple of DVDs using DVD Studio Pro on 10.9. It was rock solid. I don’t recall if I used Media Encoder or Compressor to encode the video, though. If I were a betting man, I’d bet it was Media Encoder just because of the convenience from Premiere, but I’m not certain.

    Unfortunately, outside the window is the compressor for the split system A/C that cools my office. Beyond that is the smoking area; beyond that, parking and an access road. But that double-pane window really does block a LOT of noise. Also, only about 4″ of it overlaps onto the toilet area, so the amount of window that needs to be blocked by the booth is small.

    I was mistaken about the skinny wall; it’s actually concrete. On the other side of it is a staircase leading to into the building. There are double steel doors there, it is a primary point of access to our floor.

    As far as HVAC, the closet itself is lacking. We have a small fan above the door that pulls air from the computer lab. According to official plans, the area is classified as a closet, so it doesn’t merit oxygen. 🙁

    The equipment doesn’t generate much noise, but it’s not 100% silent. Neither is the fluorescent lighting.

    The sound blankets are something I hadn’t considered, and would certainly be easy to do! Do you have a particular brand/material in mind?

    As far as how much tolerance I have for little sounds, I’m looking for the ability to record something that sounds clean and professional. I’m not afraid to use Audition to remove room tone, but I am lazy enough that I’d rather not have to bother! Plus, the easier the process is, the more successfully I can train students to manage it.

    Huh. Funny that rental never occurred to me. That would certainly be an option if I treated it as a workshop, but I don’t think it would be tenable for an entire class. I’ll kick that idea around for a bit, see where I land on it.

    In the meantime, I’d still love to hear what you would buy with the budgets!
