  • Open up the movie in QuickTime, choose Window->Show Movie Properties (Apple-J), select the Video Track and click on the Visual Settings tab. At the bottom right is a checkbox for High Quality; just make sure it’s checked.

Back in the old Powermac G3 days, machines weren’t so hot at playing video so this option allowed real-time preview. Why it’s STILL the default is beyond me.

There’s also a handy droplet called HiQual that does it for you automatically.

    Hope that helped,

    Tom

  • Hi Walter,

Would you mind clarifying your problems with Final Touch HD and DVCPRO HD? We’re using it quite happily here, rendering out to uncompressed. There are still a few bugs, but it doesn’t seem to be format-dependent. It’d be useful to get some feedback and see if there’s anything we should be avoiding.

    Thanks,

    Tom

[Bob Zelin] “I have GOT to be missing something here.”

Yeah – I was using the JH3 to test the workflow! Well aware it’s got a downconverter in – quite a good one, too. Some clients of ours bought in some HDV (eurgh) footage and our HD-Connect box was already being used. So we had to hire in a Miranda, which doesn’t have a downconverter and, well, that’s where we’re coming from.

Still haven’t been able to test it yet with the Miranda. Will post back if I have any more issues.

Thanks to everyone for their help,

    Tom

Hmmm … just tried it on a second machine, being fed material directly from a JH3, and it worked like a charm. Precisely how I thought it was going to work: I was able to change formats instead of the drop-down menu being greyed out.

Will try again when the other machine becomes free. It was being fed by a Miranda HDV converter, but that shouldn’t make any difference should it? Still a valid 1080i stream going in.

    Thanks for your help,

    Tom

[AJA Sales Department] “You simply apply a down-convert in the KONA Control Panel to the input you wish to downconvert.”

That’s the bit I’m having problems with! The Format menu (where I assume the down-convert’s applied) is greyed out. Is this not how I do it?

Definitely using a SD timeline, thanks.

    Bob,

I really should look more carefully before posting! Spotted the unbalanced RCA outputs; was looking for XLRs. I currently have an LHe, which has both balanced and unbalanced audio out, hence the confusion.

Would still appreciate your suggestions on PPMs, though.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Hi Bob,

Probably being dull, but does the K3 box really have analogue audio outputs? I can’t find them …

What do you use for monitoring four channels? Would I need 2 flying cows? Or would a digital mixer be more appropriate?

Also, (sorry, lots of questions) what do you recommend as PPM meters?

    Thank you for your time,

    Tom

That’s strange. We were getting the shifts moving from YUV (AJA 10-bit timeline) to RGB and back again. We moved to a 10bit RGB timeline in Final Cut which has solved all our issues.

What codecs do you use to avoid getting a shift?

    Thanks,

    Tom

Hey thanks Noah – that was a quick response!

But it’s basically broken, right? We’ve been banging our head against the wall all day. We’ve ended up just rendering to a 10bit RGB format (AJA) and using a RGB timeline in Final Cut. It’s a graphics-only project.

A shame – it’s a nice idea to have that kind of integration with Final Cut. Just a pity about the implementation …

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Thanks, Duane. I’d appreciate it.

Apparently the Kona LHe is due in this country here by the end of the week. We’ll be testing it, so I’ll let you know how it goes.

    All the best,

    Tom
