Kona 3 and Analog Speakers
Posted by Michael Sacci on March 13, 2006 at 10:25 pmThink I shoot myself in the foot here.
I’m putting together a HD system and I purchased KRK v4 speakers and they have
XLR & 1/4″ TRS Combo10K Ohm Balanceddoes anyone know what I need to make these work or do I need to get different speakers? If so does anyone have any recommendations in the $500 for a pair.

March 14, 2006 at 12:25 amYou need a D/A such as an MAudio Flying cow or the behringer model (don’t know the number off the top of my head).
You can also get a K box and route the unbalanced outputs to your KRKs. You’d probably want to get a cheap analog mixer to put in the middle for volume/level control.

Jeremy is correct here. You have purchased wonderful, excellent speakers. I love KRK’s. They have ANALOG audio inputs. You do not need different speakers – you need an AJA K3-Box ($299) for your Kona 3, and a little audio mixer (just like Jeremy said) to act as a little monitoring device. You can also take the output of your MAC G5, and the output of your VTR’s, and stick these into the mixer, so you can hear the audio outputs of these devices as well. Don’t change your speakers, just get a K3 Box and a little mixer, and you are done.bob Zelin

March 14, 2006 at 6:27 amThanks, all good options. Just got worried doing my first HD shoot the end of the month and trying to get the system up and running before hand.

March 14, 2006 at 7:47 amYou should be quite happy with the Kona 3. We finnished our first HD edit last week and it looked and worked terrific. We did, however, use the Kona LHe.

March 30, 2006 at 8:44 amHi Bob,
Probably being dull, but does the K3 box really have analogue audio outputs? I can’t find them …
What do you use for monitoring four channels? Would I need 2 flying cows? Or would a digital mixer be more appropriate?
Also, (sorry, lots of questions) what do you recommend as PPM meters?
Thank you for your time,
Tom

I really should look more carefully before posting! Spotted the unbalanced RCA outputs; was looking for XLRs. I currently have an LHe, which has both balanced and unbalanced audio out, hence the confusion.
Would still appreciate your suggestions on PPMs, though.
Thanks,
Tom
