I have an honest question for my fellow professionals in the post production world. It seems like at this point, everyone is at the mercy of Apple — from hardware to software to workflows. They say you don’t new Xserve, so they kill it just like that. They say Shake sucks, so they kill it just like that. They don’t care how many people have built an entire working ecosystem on their products, if it ceases to be profitable, then they cut it off.

Adobe has made alot of improvements over the years, and from PrePro CS3 to the venerable CS5, which has had ALOT of the FCPX features for the last year [since NAB 2010], why havent you made the shift yet? Is there something wrong with PPCS5? Is there something FCP can do that CS5 can’t? CS5 can in fact open FCP projects now [and Avid] via XML import, so thats something to consider about backward compatibility.

I personally am both a PrePro and an FCP user, and I am a bit frustrated that PrePro, in its current incarnation as CS5/5.5 doesnt get any “love” from the pros in the post-production industry. In my opinion, if the pros in the industry supported this very useful piece of software, then it would progress very fast with 3rd party plugin support, workflow enhancements, etc.

FCP got the love way back version 1.0, and look where it is now. Widely used in the industry with alot of 3rd party support to make up for its short comings — true import of image sequences, inter operability with other industry standard software, etc.

Why is CS5 getting this much resistance, especially now that it is both Mac and PC friendly, and works really well with our most loved imaging software like AFX and Photoshop?

    Just an honest question.

Ey Dave, been using Encore for several projects for Blu-Ray authoring, running fine so far. Haven’t had any authoring or encoding issues. I’m running it on a PC though.

I’d save the money from the Quadro cards for a GTX470, which is already officially supported by CS5.

Unfortunately, this is a BMD problem. I’m having the same problem as well with the Decklink HD line of cards. PPro CS5 works flawlessly when using non-BMD presets, but once you use a BMD preset to get external monitoring, everything becomes unusable. And it becomes especially screwy when using the hardware assisted CUDA engine. Based on my experience and testing, BMD cards work well for CS5 only if you are working with BMD avi files.

Which is why I am also looking at the MXO2 to solve this problem. Anyone care to share their real-world experience with CS5 and MXO2?

  • Would you mind checking how big your Premiere Pro project file is? The first release of PPro CS5 had a bug that if you had a lot of media, whether it was actual media or media created by rendering, that the project file would bloat, sometimes to 1 or 2 gbs! The 5.0.2 update fixed this problem though. Have you updated to this version? Hope that helps.

Personally, I think this is a sign of things to come.

With the way the trend is going, I’m would not be surprised if they abandon Final Cut Studio by NAB next year. By then they would be rolling out iMovie 8 HD or something to replace it. Clearly the development of the enterprise/pro division has been sidetracked, if not slowly being abandoned. I’m not sure how much money Apple is making from their Pro products, but I am sure it is way lower than their profit margins from the consumer based products. They are fighting a bigger fight in the iOS front with Android making alot of headway this year, and I’m sure that is not something they will take sitting down. So naturally, all efforts will be focused there, and that is unfortunate for the pro market.

With the Adobe CS5 speed and integration presenting a very appealing alternative to FCP, I think we might be seeing alot of pros shifting these next few months.

    My 2 cents.

Hmmm, I, on the other hand, have had nothing but good experiences with Win7 in a BMD workflow using PP CS3 and CS5 doing offline and online editing for TVCs.

Regarding rackmount solutions, unless you’re willing to spend an arm and a leg on a turnkey solution, I think a 3U would be more realistic. You can go to your local Fry’s or PC components seller and have them assemble a Gigabyte based PC for less than $800 with a 3U rackmount casing (not including the LCD). Lemme know if you need the exact specs. Were using one side by side our BMD Resolve right now. Works great.

We’ve been trying to get decent EDLs from Premiere Pro since PP 2.0 and I must say I believe it is one of the things that Adobe has failed to do any improvement on. It’s already version CS5 and it’s still the same problem. Unfortunately, this is the reason why we still have Avid Media Composers in our post-prod workflow for offline editing for TV spots.
