I have mixed tapes on all my cameras and though I think the Sony tapes are absolutely inferior to the Panasonic dry formula, I have survived.
I hit the camera with the cleaner every now and then.
I must admit though, that the Panasonic Pro dry formula 83 min. mini DV tape is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Panasonic.
I will use these tapes on any other camera in the future.
It’s so sad, my Sony friends with their glitchy 40 min. tapes. And no fun to splice together and re-align those interviews.

dirt cheap.
I use the 83 min professional variety with almost never a dropout.

And you have individual real time control over the levels which is something that drove me crazy about the PD-150’s.

Firestore has a great interim solution and I am absolutely convinced that some bright enterprising group will come up with a firestore like front end for cheap consumer hard drives which are now cheaper per gig to buy than Pro mini-DV. Maybe I’ll call my business advisor, this would be an easy product to make. The could have put this in the camera so you could go straight to a consumer hard drive, but that would defeat the need for P2.
For now I am using DV with a laptop & a firewire/SATA/IDE housing. The housing will take ANY consumer hard drive but these are not good for run & gun.
Firestore is not that expensive ($1500 for 80 gig?) and you can back up later to consumer hard drives and or/DVD via a “simple backup” type computer.
Pro-sumers should probably forget about P2 for a while, but who needs it?
Not me. At least not yet.

September 14, 2005 at 1:10 am in reply to: “Issues” or items to consider with HVX-200 1. P2 not necessary (cool). 2. Archiving? 3. Stealth Controller?I have used the DVD’s to archive, although I must say that I don’t trust the medium yet.
I have had so many bad DVD’s returned over the years, and who knows how many never call.
I have a “simple backup” program by Sony that takes about 4 DVD’s to back up a 2 hour program in DV. I have never tried to dump them back to the computer to verify that it was stored with no errors.
I will have to check one. I usually use it as a secondary backup although it is time consuming as it goes back to verify each disk. Definately a good solution for shorter clips.
I find this camera very exciting, although I am not sure about P2 yet. You don’t need P2 to make this camera work!

You almost have to hire a full time researcher to choose your equipment if you’re on a budget these days! LOL
So many choices.

It’s cheaper than tape.
2 40-gigs are would be practically free.
There are programs that would use 7 DVD’s to back up big files, but I would not entirely trust them.

Awesome Barry!
If they don’t, somebody will. They already have these divices for Pro-Audio. Hot swappable even.

I guess I am a special case because right now my NEED is for a good native 16:9 progressive camera.
I don’t think anybody in my type of market will need HD for another 2-5 years. The majority of my customers just changed from VHS to DVD the Christmas before last (when the players got down to $40).
I believe the same will happen with HD. When the HD disk players get down to $100, then people will want that from us.
If my company Dreamscape Digital Media shoots our next indie this year, we may go with a firestore and a laptop to shoot with 2 of these Pannys.
YES, the JVC LOOKS beautiful, but will it LOOK beautiful? Unless I see something spectatular, I am sticking the the makers of my DVX and the Varicam.
Very, very exciting choices no matter how you slice it!

I will be archiving twice, on 2 hard drives which will be half the price per minute of Pro DV tape in two years (about the time I will start having occasional uses for HD).
