How does the exported file look?

After Effects does dithering on output to deal with banding issues like this, but it doesn’t dither for previews.

If you want to force the dithering to happen for a preview, you can put a no-op 8-bpc effect at the bottom of the layer stack. I use the Arithmetic effect at its default settings, which do nothing. The mere fact that there is an 8-bpc effect in the layer stack will cause the dithering to occur, though.

Do not export H.264 and MPEG-2 files from After Effects. Use Adobe Media Encoder for final delivery formats like these.

I recommend calling Adobe Technical Support again to work through your QuickTime issue if you have already worked through all of the items in the blog post that you linked to.

This time, make sure that you’re talking with someone in the video applications queue, and don’t hesitate to ask to have you case escalated to the next-higher level if you aren’t getting adequate assistance.

If you want to animate and export vectors, use Flash Professional.

Do not use the After Effects SWF export. It is terrible, buggy, and not long for this world. We’re likely going to remove it from the next version of After Effects because it is much more trouble than it’s worth.

Ah, that is a very easy problem to fix.

Mac OS has incorrectly set the permissions for some files. Mac OS will _often_ set permissions of folders and files incorrectly.

You’ll see this problem in programs like After Effects in the form of error messages saying that a file can’t be written, overwritten, or renamed.

To fix this in the case of After Effects, go to the preferences folder and set the _entire_ preferences folder ( /Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/12.2/ ) and all of its contents to be writable, not read-only.

Please give me the case number for your interaction with Adobe Technical Support. You appear to have been given bad information. I need to follow up on that.

The trial version of After Effects works on Mavericks.

You need to install a bug-fix update to run either After Effects 12.1 or 12.2, since After Effects 12.0 has a problem on Mavericks.

The FreeForm plug-ins from Mettle are good for warping 2D planes in 3D.

If you use the ray-traced 3D renderer in After Effects CS6 and later, you can bend a 2D layer in 3D:

My favorite technique with this is to use the CC Simple Wire Removal effect. Use two instances making a cross/plus shape.
