Don’t worry about the graphics card. A top-of-the-line graphics card doesn’t do much more than a middle-of-the-road graphics card for After Effects. Focus on fast processors, lots of RAM, and fast hard disks (more than one). And use a 64-bit OS.

Also, make sure that you’re doing everything else that you can to improve performance—not just buying hardware.

The pointer icon that you describe is the one that appears when the pointer is outside of the outline/mesh that contains the Puppet pins. (It’s the one in the third list item on this page.)

Does the pointer change to a different icon when you put it inside of an outline?

I agree with Mike that the Colorama effect may be overkill for simple posterization. The Posterize effect may be adequate.

However, if you do decide to try to do this with Colorama effect, be sure to turn off the Interpolate Palette option. If you leave this on, the output colors will change gradually instead of being limited to the discrete colors of a poster.

I really like the Colorama effect, but I find that getting good results from it involves a lot of tweaking of the color stop triangles on the output cycle. Don’t count on a preset.

The Animation codec is a QuickTime codec. When you’re choosing a format in the output module, choose QuickTime Movie. Then, click the Format Options button in the Output Module Settings dialog box and choose Animation from the Compression Type menu in the QuickTime dialog box that opens.

That said, I prefer the PNG codec for some purposes in my QuickTime movies. They’re both lossless, but the PNG codec does a better job of compressing live-action video. The Animation codec is better at compressing large expanses of flat color (like cartoons).

Usually when people say that they have no audio when they preview, it’s because they’re hitting the spacebar (using standard preview) and not using RAM preview. Check to make sure that you’re using RAM preview.

If you still have no audio, check to see what happens when you do an audio-only preview.

Regarding audio on output, make sure that Audio Output is selected in the output module.

What do you mean by “old paper”? If you want to have a texture that looks like old paper, you can just download an image file and use that as a background and blend it with your layers.
