I’d use mocha-AE. There are lots of links to tutorials and other resources for using mocha-AE on this page.
If you do just use the After Effects point tracker, you can do a Perspective Corner Pin track to deal with the perspective issues.
You may be able to deal with the shadows by picking the right blending mode to retain the darks of the shadows but replace the white of the star. Or you could just paint some shadows back in.

Mondo is the codename for a framework that pieces of some Adobe applications are built on. It’s a big enough thing that that error message alone isn’t enough for me to have any idea what, exactly, is causing the error for you.

If you have Photoshop Extended, you could just do this in Photoshop, since it does import and operate on video.

Try typing ‘infrared’ into the Effects & Presets panel. Behold! A built-in animation preset called ‘Colorize – infrared’.
Or you could search for ‘infrared’ in After Effects Community Help and find that plus a few other solutions.

You can export an AAF file out of Vegas and import that into After Effects. There’s a link to a brief tutorial at the very bottom of the “Supported import formats” page of After Effects Help.

Coming in late to this thread, but to reiterate: You’ve got a 6,000×10,000 layer. At 32-bpc that one layer would take the entirety of the 1.2GB of RAM that you said that you had allocated to After Effects. As you’ve noticed, blur effects require an image buffer even larger than the size of the layer.
BTW, why are you leaving any RAM at all for other applications when you’re having trouble rendering a single frame? Leaving RAM for other applications only makes sense if everything is rendering fine and you have RAM to spare.
I’m glad that you’ve got a machine with more RAM available to make this work.
Also, I noticed that you’re using After Effects 9.0.1. I’m not saying that failing to apply the After Effects 9.0.2 update is the cause of your problem, but there were a lot of memory and performance fixes in that update.

I have yet to change the filter option from the default Best setting.

As Xinlai suggests, QuickTime must be installed. This is the default on Mac OS, but Windows users must install the free QuickTime Player separately.

Yes, the size of the layer matters far more than does the size of the composition frame.
Here’s a page that explains what makes memory requirements go up.
If you have a 10,000×10,000pixel layer, but it’s shown in a 100X100 composition frame, you still have to have enough RAM for a 10,000×10,000 image buffer.
