I did a quick look at the Motion tutorials and YouTube videos and it seems they are pretty much focused on TEXT and transitions.

I’m more interested in putting graphic overlays on top of the video. Having a line drawn on screen to outline a feature or give shiny features an extra glint, etc.

Is there a better tool for that than Motion? As my videos are not text heavy, I’m currently content with what is built into FCPX for those.

    Thanks again.

I have to follow Bret’s advice myself, as I don’t know Motion yet.

However, if you look at the existing text animations in FCPX, you have a lot of options. And, when you see something you like you can tweak it A LOT to make it unique. You can change font, size, position, how it zooms in, how it zooms out, etc. Highlight the title’s box in the bottom browser and look at all the settings options you have for each animation.

I do like the one you showed in Casey’s video. I don’t think I’ve seen one like that in FCPX, but that is what he uses for editing.

Phew. That’s a lot of options. Thank you.

If I just buy Apple Motion is that a good start? (I’ll have to look up the app, I’m not at all familiar with it) or do I get that AND the plug-ins?

Yes, I think most people have mentioned some Adobe app when I ask them, but I forge which.
