You’re losing space from 2 aspects – LTFS takes up space, metadata takes up space. The drives are designed to deal with underruns properly so as not to lose capacity due to slow data sources.
Another possibility – are you updating existing files over time? If so, you ending up with multiple copies on the tape since you can’t erase and replace an existing file and LTFS simply masks the original, earlier versions as deleted while the space is still consumed on the tape.

We’re looking into the aggressive nature of App Nap since BRU PE’s actual backup engine is running in a background thread. If it’s left unattended for too long, App Nap reduces our priority and we slow down.
In the meantime, check the status of App Nap on your system (it’s now a hidden option) using:
defaults read NSGlobalDomain NSAppSleepDisabled
Does that return 0, 1, or unknown?
To turn that on (disable App Nap), use:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSAppSleepDisabled -bool YES

You can do that using the BRU PE tool “tapectl” from the command line like this:
tapectl unltfs
That will remove the LTFS partitioning and return the tape for normal use as a data tape for any non-LTFS application.

Since you’re using a normal SAS solution, there shouldn’t be any reason for the Import tool to see the hardware any differently from the other BRU tools.

I just realized that my last post didn’t stick – sorry about that.
What type of SAS HBA are you using? We’ve had issues with the way OS X Yosemite and El Capitan “downgrade” some vendors’ drivers.

The physical devices are only manufactured by HP or IBM. Everyone else is just a rebranded version of one of those drives. Quantum is definitely not an off brand. They are also a major member of LTO.org. They actually used to manufacture drives, but consolidating the manufacturing under the two big guys helps manage costs better.
As to Neil’s note about TB vs. SAS, all the drives are either SAS or Fibre-Channel. Therefore, when you purchase a so-called Thunderbolt drive, you’re actually buying a drive with an adapter. The adapter may be built in (mLogic) or a separate sidecar (ATTO, Sonnet, HighPoint), but there’s no such thing as a native Thunderbolt drive, For the mLogic mTape unit, you’re actually getting a Thunderbolt to PCIe adapter built into their case with a HighPoint RR 27XX card installed.

Check to make sure that the system recognizes the drive. Open System Profiler and check the “SAS” pane. Is the drive listed there?

In your case, you are still a very good candidate for LTO-5. Reasonable speed (140MB/sec±) and capacity per tape (1.5TB native). The pricing on LTO-5 drives is very good and LTO-5 media is in the $25 per tape range.
