I used to fix these, by hand, in ProTools… you can use the pencil tool and re-draw the waveforms, fill in the curves where they got mangled in modulation – but there are probably hundreds of these waveforms, huh?

I’m SURE there’s a better way of doing it by now. Have you tried using the analysis tab in Soundtrack Pro? May not be perfect, but better than nothing!

    Thanks, Dave,

I actually had already used an expression to lock the Bulge Effect center point to the position of the Adj. layer in which it resided — which I forgot to mention in my original post. When I parented the adj. layer to the ‘circle’ shape layer, it broke that relationship, which is why my effect was ‘disappearing’. I changed the bulge effect’s center expression to lock to the position of the shape layer instead.

For some reason, it wasn’t so easy for me to pick-whip the shape layer’s position, I had to do some additional adding-subtracting to adjust it and make it line up right. I think this might be because when you create a shape on a shape layer, it’s not always centered over the anchor point of that layer. Do you know of any way to automatically center it? Would be helpful!

I found a workaround, but it’s going to be a pain once the equation changes!

    1) Write the equation in a spreadsheet to get a list of the data points.
    2) Use Illustrator’s graph tool to create a graph based on the data. (have to copy pasted directly from the spreadsheet. I used Apple’s Numbers, and it only saves as Numbers or Excel file, neither of which were recognized by illustrator.
    3) Copy the line in the graph, and use window > pathfinder to make a single path from all the little graph points. Copy this path.
    4) In AE create a shape layer with a random shape as a placeholder. Click on that shape’s ‘path’ property and hit paste.

Still waiting to figure out if it can all be done within AE, though.

Hmmm… perhaps I’m doing something wrong here, but I didn’t get anything to show up.

I created a solid, added the WriteOn, Grid, and ExpressionPointControl which I called ‘Scale’ with a value of [1,1]. I pasted your expression into the expression for ‘brush position’, but I’m not seeing any kind of a graph. Am I missing something here?

    Thanks!

    Thanks Dave,

I’m not sure that I can get the rounded corners and the stroke and fill styles I want from using masks, but I think I figured out a way to do it with rectangle shape. I coupled the rectangle’s Y position to the Y-size, and it seems to move the way I want… and having it all coupled to one value is going to make my expression easy.

    Oh, sorry… It’s just the y
