  • HPE LTFS and the BRU have nothing to do with your problem. You need to resolve the SAS connection first.

If the ATTO HBA is showing up in the system information SAS tab and says the driver is installed then you these could be your culprits:

    SAS Cable is bad
SAS port on ATTO HBA is bad
Tape Drive SAS port is bad
    Tape Drive Controller is bad

Probably not it…. don’t try to use ATTO RAID drivers with a non-RAID card. Do make sure you have the H644 DRIVER only.

If all else fails your data is not gone. You just need to get a working computer or tape drive.

I have many customers running Archiware for their tape libraries. It is probably the most reliable software for TAR backups to a tape library on MAC.

If you’re on MAC take a look at Archiware. If on Windows look at Acronis.

Sure you can use a regular LTO7 tape in an LTO8 drive. I’m assuming by your subject you’re asking for the real capacity?

Just like a hard drive, it’s usually a bit less than the stated amount. An LTO7 would be like 5.5TB in reality or possibly less. There is no gain in capacity by using an 8 drive over a 7 etc.

  • You can download HP LTT Library & Tape Tools to run a performance and health diagnostic on your tape drive to rule the tape drive out.

Are you using the RAID through the ATTO Thunderlink too? If the ATTO is downgrading to 3G SAS that would be a reason why the tape drive and RAID can’t work together. If the RAID is TB3 use a different port on the left-side, do not daisy chain through the Thunderlink.

In reality it’s most likely the ATTO Thunderlink as the culprit because it downgrades you to 3G SAS , but it’s hard to prove that to them unless you have a native SAS environment to show the drive works there.

If you’re passing all the health and performance in the HP LTT then your ATTO Thunderlink is having issues with your Transport Layer Retries (TLR).

ATTO recommends setting the device from 6G SAS to 3G for better stability. You’re still probably going to have some problems though especially if trying to do more than 1TB without a solid TLR. Plus 3G SAS isn’t ideal for an LTO7.

HPE is going to point fingers at ATTO and vice versa especially if HPE LTT is showing the drive is healthy. I’d say run a full tape test on HP LTT to see if it craps out after the 2TB+ mark again.

Run HPE LTT (Library and Tape Tools). https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c00352573

You can run a diagnostic on your tape drive. If it’s brand new and has a cleaning light on you most likely have a defective unit.

Don’t try to use any USB 3.0 ports with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter either, it won’t work. Most Macbook Pros are all Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C though. I have noticed a trend with Macbook Pro’s that the left-side ports are the true TB3.

Using a Stardom USB hard drive is a speed bottleneck. LTO6 drives are also much slower than LTO7/LTO8. You can do up to 160 MB/s on LTO6, but a USB 3.0 hard drive is usually max 140 MB/s under ideal situations.

You would probably go faster if you used an SSD or if your HDD was in a RAID and connected by Thunderbolt or at least USB 3.1
