I’m still not sure what the heck you are asking, but this is the part I do know.

If you shoot 1080i, you will be shooting at 59.94 fields per second. I have never seen a camera or an editing system that can handle interlaced footage at 24 frames per second, or 48 fields per second. In a previous post, you said that you will be shooting at 24 frames per second. That means you have to shoot 24 progressive. I am not aware of any interlaced option at that frame rate.

We’re all supposed to be communication specialists. Are we all just failing to communicate? Have I still totally misunderstood your question?

You can download software and firmware updates for the PDW-U1 that will allow you to write back to the drive. We’ve only done it with one of our units, but that one unit is writing back to the disk.

August 6, 2008 at 9:12 pm in reply to: Still Capturing Out-of-Sync Audio

Our problem was purely a configuration issue. Our Beta deck (UVW-1800) was not correctly hooked up, and there was a menu item on the deck that was not correct.

We are still having audio/video sync issues with the IO-HD and the Sony HVR-M25U HDV deck. When using a HDMI cable between the deck and the Io-HD, Hi Def video works fine, especially when ingesting with the ProRes422 codec. However, if we use the Io-HD to down convert into any SD codec, we get serious out-of sync issues.

This is a VERY consistent problem, but it only exist when using the HDMI cable between the deck and the Io-HD, and it also only exists in SD, not HD video.

Did you edit the original program in FCP as a 720P 59.94 sequence? If so, just export that sequence using Compressor. There are pre-sets in Compressor for 16×9 programs. Author the DVD in DVD Studio Pro, and it should come out wide-screen.

I’m letting the Io do the down-convert. Duh! I honestly didn’t even think of letting the deck do the down convert.

But still….it is easier if the Io did the down convert. That way, I leave the deck menu settings alone, and simply set my “flavor” of video with the Easy Setups within FCP. Besides, it SHOULD WORK with the Io doing the down convert.

April 10, 2008 at 6:51 pm in reply to: IoHD odd 9 frame slide

Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we’ve had very similar problems, so you’re not alone. The only difference is that our problem appears to be 7 frames out of sync instead of 9 frames.

The bad news is that we haven’t figured it out yet. It appears to be reference related, but I’m not sure on that. I’ve talked with AJA Tech support, and so far, they are stumped as well.

I can tell you this: if you carefully watch your log and capture window during during capture, you can see that is out of sync. If at this point, you close log and capture, and then open it again, your video will be captured correctly.

It is not codec related. We have captured out-of-sync video in 8-bit uncompressed, DVCPro-50, and ProRes422. It doesn’t appear to be Final Cut related, because we have captured out-of-sync video with both Final Cut and AJA VTR Exchange. It is not drive related, because we have captured out-of-sync video on our eSATA RAID, the internal Mac hard drive, and an external Firewire drive.

We are on a 3.2 GHz Mac Pro, 8-core, OS 10.5, FCP 6.

If you figure it out, let us know.

    Jeremy,

Funky wrong video that’s hard to describe. 🙂

It doesn’t matter. I was changing the Easy Set-up to match what I wanted as my out-going video. After following your instructions, everything now looks great. Thanks

April 10, 2008 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Down converting from XDCAM-HD to SD

Thanks for the help. We’ve only had our XDCAM gear for a bit over a week. I was changing the Easy Set-up to match what I wanted the outgoing video to be, and that was causing some strange problems.

Keeping the Easy Set-up to match the XDCAM-HD, and right clicking on the Analog icon within Kona Control Panel, and changing the secondary video to 525i works.

Boy, this sounds suspicious, and unfortunately, familiar. Tell me, are your clips actually being captured 9 frames out of sync? Or does the sync issue develop somewhere else in the work flow?

March 26, 2008 at 3:42 pm in reply to: public opinion poll: XDCAM vs. P2

    Walter,

I’ve got to disagree with on the archiving. All you have to do to archive XDCAM material is put the disk on a shelf. With P2, you have to DO SOMETHING. It may be as simple as burning a DVD data disk, or dumping files to hards drives that sit on a shelf, or whatever. But with XDCAM, you keep the video on the original camera media; with P2, you have to move it and store it somewhere else.
