When I posted my reply I was “moderated” so it took a while to show up. By the time it did you had already replied. So it’s not a matter of I don’t agree but that I didn’t see your reply yet when I said mine :-p but there are also multiple ways to do the same thing in After Effects so I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer.

You’ll have to mask them out and attach the tracking data to the masks so they will follow the X’s properly.
