I’m a motion graphics guy, so I couldn’t really comment on what it is like for traditional animators. For myself, it is usually just voice and music tracks, maybe some sound FX, and those are either pre-made and sent to me, or I layer myself within AE.

The first things I tried were toggling off all the video layers, and then tried deleting all audio keyframes. No third party audio plug ins were ever used, I did have a pan effect on some of the layers but I tried deleting that too. Still blank audio and the same import message.
Have been testing with a small file, but no matter what I do, it doesn’t seem to import. At this point, the team and I have decided to do a different workflow, and I am going to output a few different audio ‘layers’ as separate exports and use that instead. Would be really nice to figure out why this isn’t working though. I have had thoughts about using Premiere more in my workflow, but this has me convinced the other way.

I checked out the template, and you are correct, the 3D moon is pre-rendered and you can’t change it, just the 2D leaf part. So you have no way of really changing that element. You’re kind of out of luck, short of building this yourself in something like C4D – which will take a ton of time and talent – whoever made this obviously has some 3D skills. If I had to do it just within AE, I would try RG Psunami combined with particular for the water droplets. And even if you were really proficient in them, it would still take a lot of work.
I would try reaching out directly to the creator, he might be able to use your 3D object to build a custom animation for you (at a cost of course). Either that find a different template, there are definitely options out there, like this one :

February 29, 2020 at 6:27 pm in reply to: Advice on NAS for AE

Just wanted to follow up on the Render Garden suggestion in case someone else reads this – I tried it out last night, and was largely impressed. Basically allows me to do a similar type render farm to the way C4D does, with each node rendering a section of the file. Most impressive was the way I could use it to unlock cores and use my main machine to the fullest – which even just using my local machine resulted in render in less than half the time of AE renderer. Definitely is a tool I will use. It is shocking that AE doesn’t do something like this automatically!

There is definitely some serious limitations though – it is really finicky when using multiple machines, the only way I could get it to work properly was using an image sequence, trying to do direct to animation or prores resulted in weird problems with with the segmentation. Some further experimentation will help, but the whole thing was pretty buggy to figure out. Also the ffmpeg post export to mp4 was garbage, which is unfortunate as that is my primary format for delivering previews to clients. As it stands, to get to mp4, I would need to render as an image sequence, then bring back into AE, then go to ME. Taking an image sequence direct to ME gives it a heart attack and encoding it was painfully slow. Taking the extra step through AE worked, but it’s an extra step…

I did some benchmarks, and encoded a large file typical of my workflow – 10800 x 1080 px, with some Element, Particular effects, and a bunch of 2D animation. Element caused major problems, (which is a major point against, I use Element a lot) and I had to pre-render that first to get it to work at all. Once I did, AE renderer direct to ProRes was just over 10 min, Render garden local to prores was just under 5. For an image sequence on multiple machines, cut time down to less than 3 min, but of course added time getting into a useable container. Direct render to H265 through ME was 21 min. Direct render to Prores in ME was pretty much the same as the AE engine, around 10 min.

I also couldn’t get render garden to work on multiple machines without having a separate external drive specific for its render. Funnily enough I think render garden would perform really well on a NAS – where every node machine had access to the main drive and files, and mounts it in the exact same path (this is key to render garden success). So while it is a good tool, and I will use it for some things, I think I might still benefit from a NAS. Render garden is powerful, but is super buggy still. I couldn’t rely on it during a major project delivery pipeline. Reminded me a lot of working on PCs – powerful, but you spend most of your time trying to get them to work properly.

There are numerous options out there – I had luck with this one.

Yeah I have looked at it as an option – I really like to use Media Encoder for large batch exports though, and render garden seems to only work within the AE renderer. I know, I know, better workflow is to always render out of AE first then encode, but when I have to fire off 50 previews to my client overnight, they render straight to media encoder and mp4 output.
It does look like it’s gotten simpler to use than it used to though, I think I will give it a go before dropping bank on a NAS.

  • One key factor, I am talking about Mac’s, not PC. I was also able to get to the step you’ve shown on my Mac, but PPT then disables the duplication when you take it full screen. Were you able to take a PPT full screen on your PC, and have it correctly display on both external outputs?

I know on PC it is possible, but you may have to turn off hardware acceleration in order to get it to stop from changing your mirroring/duplicate settings. There doesn’t seem to be an equivalent option on Mac.

  • These are literally jump cuts. The content itself zooms in an out right before/after the cuts. To do this in AE would be really simple, apply a 5-10 frame zoom into a piece of footage, cut, and the same zooming out of the following.

  • Okay, so I have found a way to fudge what I wanted to do. In my final comp(4), I built an adjustment layer, to get the glass effect, and then I took comp 3 and added a fill effect and duplicated it 10 times in a precomp (to make up for transparency/alpha) and then used that as a luma matte for the adjustment layer. It works, although it certainly isn’t elegant, and is killing me for RAM preview and will on the final render as well…

Sure wish there was a better way, if anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it.

wow. I can’t believe that adobe would be fine with such a glaring error in the media encoder.
I was running into the same problem with some clips I created in AE, and brought into premiere. Usually I’m a FCP user but this project had a restriction that I could only use adobe software… (don’t ask!) Glad I found this post, or I would have spent all day re-rendering files out of AE! For the life of me I couldn’t figure out why some clips went dark and others not. After reading this I checked, and sure enough, only clips I changed duration/speed on were the ones that lost brightness.
For the record, I’m on a mac as well.
