Hey Dave,
Yeah its a interesting concept for sure. I’ve seen it done really well at New Forms Festivals up here in Vancouver…I’ve captured stuff before using snapzpro or something like that (cant remember) but it was really iffy on the quality and performance(lots of stuttering.) So far it seems capturing off the decks was the best solution….or was it to the decks?…how did i have that rigged again hmmm it was 5 years ago.
I was just hoping some guru maid some obscure program for it 🙂
Looks like I’ve got a few hours of compositing to do 🙁

btw whats the standard info on a slate for broadcast?

Thanks for the reply.Unfortunately Flash doesn’t offer a .9 pixel aspect ratio as a setting…so the import to FCP will need to be square pixels and the conversion has to be done in FCP…
Like you say, if it looks fine on a TV monitor, I guess I can ignore the pixelation in the FCP viewer. I’m almost positive I had a work around but oh well.

Wow, Thanx for all the great replies. Its been a great discussion. Obviously an entire broadcast post facility would be great but it ain’t cheap. So, until I get lengthier and more lucrative video heavy projects the work around suggestions for my trusty little iMac will have to do :O)David Chai,
… that suggestion worked great! I was always under the impression that an uncompressed quicktime was the minimal quality to work with for broadcast. However the footage I revceived was shot on 35 then given to me as a photo jpeg movie. I was blown away to see the image quality wasn’t degraded. (at least from what I could see) after I clamped it down and color corrected it I played the timeline to my NTSC video monitor, the image looked fine. Even on the regular TV’s in the office. I haven;t made the leap to get the AJA but will definetly consider it.So I’m off to the post house for a TC burned VHS (this needs to be CC) then a final output to beta.I had no idea photo jpeg was even a useful compression codec….one question, why at 75% and not 100% ? is there that much difference in the data rate?

Sorry, but no…you can’t do uncompressed SD (nor HD) work with an iMac. Sure, you can get the AJA I/O that can capture uncompressed footage and send it down a firewire cable, but…what do you capture to?
The spots are mostly animation (created in the computer) combined with short bits of live action…so, at this point, I’m only working with short clips (a few secs long, probably a few gigs at most)…basically I was going to capture the footage using the FW I/O and send it to the internal HD, cut it in FCP (at low res), then render the final sequence with settings as an uncompressed QT and kick it out to tape. I’m guessing it might better and cheaper to receive the footage as a data DVD or even via ftp, edit it in FCP, then burn it back to a DVD as an uncompressed QT and let a post house master it to tape….any thoughts?
This is from the AJA website and it’s why I thought it might be a possible work around from using a post house for short projects that need to be mastered on beta…
