Basically if you are dealing with compressed formats, like R3D, they need CPU/GPU/Red rocket power to decode that efficiently. Uncompressed formats, like DPX sequences, take a lot of space and need a fast drive instead of a beefy CPU because there’s not much to decode.

I have a Pegasus Thunderbolt RAID at work and it reads/writes about 500-700 MB/s. I believe you can get close to 500 MB/s on a fast USB 3 RAID, that should do fine unless you are dealing with let’s say uncompressed 4K or you’re trying to make a multicam edit with a LOT of angles.

2K Prores doesn’t have THAT big bitrate. Also when it comes to R3D your CPU/GPU is probably the bottleneck there, because encoding that isn’t about the bitrate, unless you have a lot of picture in pictures going on. If you still need fast as hell storage you could make an internal SSD RAID to a PCI slot or a external RAID with a fast fiber connection.

I’ve used Resolve to do that. Also I’d doubly recommend that because that’s a proper tool for color work.

  • Make every track type adaptive and use the map button to map the proper channel outputs.

You really can’t mess with the original files because that’s how it’s been made and that’s how it works. Either copy the whole cards or transcode, those are pretty much the options.

You can transcode and rename footage easily with Prelude.

    Yes.

    [Dan Ekland] “(without quality loss)”

Probably with acceptable loss depending on what the original file is.

You should get a fast RAID array for the media.

Select all clips you want to capturein the project panel then File – Batch capture.

  • Make sure you are not importing it as a sequence. There’s a *format* sequence checkbox in the import window.

  • This is pretty hilarious. Dudes were FUMING about the new UI changes to the point that they had to roll out a quick patch only for other people to start raging about making the UI more legible.
