  • I recently revisited PluralEyes and here’s the problem I have with using it even though it’s a great product for it’s specific purpose(s):

Plural Eyes replaces audio from the camera and will replace it with the separately recorded audio.
I don’t want this. I want it to add the audio to the video file (with original audio) in case I need to use the original audio. I like how you always have your original audio when syncing in FCP X.

PluralEyes assumes that your separate recorded audio is always the best, generates new files with new timestamps different than the original shoot footage. This could present problems in finding content in a DAM software. Additionally you have new masters which, if you backup your original shoot content, means you have to spend more money on drives space because your edit references the content PluralEyes generated.

Can’t sync from different cameras. Another limitation is that you can’t sync clips from one camera with clips from other cameras. This is because Export Media Files can’t handle overlapping files in the timeline, and goes back to our discussion of “standard” projects.

If there are two or more audio-only tracks in your PluralEyes project, only the uppermost audio clip that overlaps with a video clip is included.

PluralEyes will trim original audio to match the corresponding video.

Dilemma: FCP X really requires all gear timestamps to be the same and it helps that devices are started and stopped at about the same time for duration sorting. If you don’t have FCP X syncing is a much more manual process. PluralEyes on the other hand you can just throw content at it and it figures it out. But if replaces audio which isn’t always a good thing and it creates new timestamps on the files which aren’t true to the shoot and may be relevant at some later point.

I would prefer PluralEyes just generate an XML describing what needs to be synced/multicamed and let FCP X process it.

I am sure I am missing something her. I know that FCP X also creates new files. I do like that it can also adjust the content creation time. Just trying to find a better (less manual) solution to organize my content into synced and multicamed clips that maintains all of the pertinent info and metadata, while allowing me point back to my originally shot content during the project archiving process. Perhaps it’s not really necessary.

David, you may want to check this article out regarding RAID 5 vs. RAID 10:

    https://www.miracleas.com/BAARF/RAID5_versus_RAID10.txt

I’ve been using RAID 10. I haven’t tried RAID 6 yet, but I would like to give a try perhaps with my next RAID.. I’ve been reluctant to go RAID 5 as well. Though some swear it’s the way to go because it’s industry standard. I don’t care what the industry does (within reason). People spend a lifetime doing things that aren’t ideal or rather, sometimes industries just stick with what they know because of the people in charge who make such decisions are unwilling to change. There’s too many factors outside the technical ones that may be able to be factored.

I am open to trying something new. Technology changes and price points often dictate that necessity to change.

Understood. I don’t use software raids though. RAID 10 in hardware.

Both of you feel that way even after reading the article at this link below?:

October 2, 2015 at 11:35 pm in reply to: Render to location other than library?

That’s exactly what I am trying to achieve. That’s what I thought should happen. I only changed media location drop down menu.

I did a test by adding a clip in the browser to a current storyline and then putting a filter on it – forcing it to render. There was nothing in Finder inside the new media location of the that I created after the render was complete.

This leads me to believe then, that according to what you suggest, render files would only show up if I had changed the cache location.

I’ll have to give it a try.

Thanks for the reply. I really want to know that how it is working with only one ultrawide monitor. Is the role estate large enough. You can’t take advantage of using the viewers or browsers on a second monitor so does your monitor have something like a virtual dual screen mode that FCP X can recognize?

Does anyone know if these ultra wide monitors can be used as a virtual dual screen? I am concerned about how I’d use Final Cut Pro X on one of these since it doesn’t have windows, but yet you can put events browsers, or viewers on a second display. I am really concerned if I’d be losing any capabilities with FCP X having a single ultra wide monitor to replace a dual screen setup.

While were at it – anyone using a curved monitors or monitors with editorial and how’s that going?

    Tangier

  • Copy that. I had that workflow in mind. Problem is I am working with two editors. We all have the same content but if by chance someone adds something to their event then importing a new one and deleting the old becomes a problem.

How do you handle displaying events on one monitor and views on the other? Does the monitor have a feature where it can mimic a dual monitor setup in a way the FCP X can recognize?

    Tangier

  • Still not working exactly as I’d like. The imported xml makes duplicate references after merging the imported event with my own. I want it to merge without duplicating references since the duplicate references are pointing to the same media anyway.
