I’m thinking about staying HDV since 7TB really is ridiculous.
But the problem is that I need those one tape = one file clips, which would mean that I’d have to ingest HDV, get all the little clips and export them to HDV again. For some reason transcoding to HDV “twice” with the GOP monsters that live in it doesn’t appeal to me.

    Are my concerns justified?

Right, I can deinterlace in Media Encoder, but I don’t like the results. Immediately thinking compressor can do a better job.

I got somewhat acceptable results but not good in using after effects, but I don’t know why I can’t get compressor to do anything about the interlacing.

I’ll check on the AV attributes.

I guess it all boils down to how things look on the screen and optimizing for that. I never want to see my DVD freeze again.

On a side note, I can’t wait to get rid of the whole medium.
The technology reminds me that of a gramophone and its 2011.

Meanwhile, I just want to learn from the mistakes since it looks like our beloved DVD’s are going to be around for a couple of years more.

Will look into BitVice as well and carve the right settings into stone for future stress-free screenings. Plus get them good quality DVD’s.
Any brands that come to mind and how to tell the difference?

    Thanks guys!

    Thanks for the input Michael.

Well I had Compressor presets to give me some perspective in the beginning, so I looked around and thought 8.1 would still be fine.
(there are people on the net who say 9.8 is pushing it..!)

Compressor 3.5.3 “DVD 90 minutes at best quality” gives me a maximum bitrate of 7.7 and for Audio 192kbps (ac3)

My audio was exactly that, so I thought it would be “safe” to say the least.

What would you recommend for avg & max video bitrate & audio bitrate to stay on the safe side?

  • Michael,
You’ve done something that you felt was right deep down.
Along the lines of Nick, who knows it was the best decision of your life.
    It’s all up to you.
You can take it the constructive way or the destructive way.
You clearly sound like a person that has passion for what he does and takes pride in it. I consider that is a very valuable asset.
Take that fire and channel that into something useful and carve out a new future for yourself.
Just apply the same approach which is loving what you do.
Those are the kind of choices made by people in our industry every day.
Sometimes it takes a big bad corporate bully to bring out the character in us.
