oh, ok, maybe I was being overcritical on myself. I did add a dash of reverb just now and in my opinion it helps enormously in sublte ways.

Well the problem with catching audio in the first place is that we were shooting multiple angles with one camera. It was kind of an experimental thing and definately exploited our lack of preparation, so I’m trying to make up for that now
Here’s a short example of the footage to give you an idea of what I’m taling about:

yeah, I’ll try a living room. And I am definately learning that the voice aught to have been recorded first. This was kind of off the cuff an grew into something that we weren’t expecting, so there wasn’t even a full script we were always filming off of….huge mistake.
-
See, what’s happening is that turning the gain down, will reduce the overall loudness of the recording so the levels never get anywhere near 0 db, but they still clip at the peaks. So, the loudes part of the recording might barely hit -12, but it still clips.
Ty, I am recording vocals for a song. I know this is better with an audio interface, but I’m doing this just to try to figure out why the heck it’s clipping.
-
I was using it indoors, in a home-made studio booth. Obviously this is not the ideal situation for a field recorder, but whatever.
It seems like by turning the attenuation on the marantz to -12, the clipping is much better but it still exists.
Perhaps baby bottle was sending too hot of a signal to the preamps so they were clipping regardless of the levels. This still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me because wouldn’t turning down the gain knob also keep the pre-amp from clipping from a hot mic signal?I’m also going to try sending the baby bottle in through an external phantom power supply and let you know how that works
-
Also worth noting, I’m using a baby bottle, and maybe it’s the mic that’s clipping. I’m standing about 8 in away, and there is a pop filter. Granted I’m singing loudly and trying to get a lot of power, but I thought the baby bottle was supposed to stand up to some pretty loud sounds.

Well yeah, you’ve definitely got a point there. But the attractive thing is the mixpre-d is that is works as an audio interface. I’m pretty sure the 302 doesn’t
And even though I can imagine the occasional situation where I might need three inputs, a part of me doesn’t want to spend the extra $500 on a just in case, when I could probably just rent something on the off chance it comes up, or upgrade if it becomes a recurring issue.
It’s kind of a tough call for me, but I’m leaning 302
-
yeah, plugging it in works fine. But with batteries, I get nothing.
-
hmm, yeah, I did hear that, unfortunately after I sold the thing..
I guess there are kind of 3 ways to go ultimately:
1. A lower end recorder like the h4n or sony m-10 + a mixer.
2. An all in one system like a FR-2, Korg 1000, or a SD702. (I understand all in one is a misnomer, but I mean sound quality more than mixish ability)
3. Some middle ground between the two like an fr2-le or hdp2 + a mixer.
Also, if I know I will never ever need 3 channels, is a mixpre comparable to a 302?
At this point I’m so confused, I just want the audio fairy to swoop in and tell me exactly what to buy.
