02-694 is “Neither S reel FG nor T reel FG can be detected in PLAY or REC mode”. You can access the service menu by pressing MENU and <- (back arrow)at the same time. Have a monitor hooked to the 2 (SUPER) output and the Character switch on the front set to ON. This menu will also let you run a few tests on the S and T reels. As far as fixing the problem - start by removing the top cover and reseating all the sensor cables and circuit cards. If that doesn't fix the problem then it's time to talk to a repair shop.

That error is “The T reel FG cannot be detected in PLAY or REC mode.” The first thing to do is power down the deck, pull the top cover and manually unthread and remove the tape. Power the unit back up, insert a junk tape and watch the threading process. All may be well. While the top is off check the innards. Is it full of dust bunnies stuck to globs of grease? Could be time for a good servicing.
You can run a diagnostic test by pressing the Menu button and the back arrow at the same time. (Be sure you have the Character switch On and a monitor hooked to the Super output Video 2) Select Service Support, select Error Log, select Error 02-674. The rest of the menu options (Yes and Next) will test the T Reel. Good luck

Thanks for the info Wayne. They are going to and from the Avid via a DSR-25 deck (firewire). The DSR-25 feeds the Beta deck. Would the DSR-25 have menu selectable set up on the composite output? If not I’ll take a TBC over there next week and try that route.

Thanks Jon. We looked at it and “NTSC has set up” is checked. It looks like the only way to get everything legal is to color correct each clip. My editor friend is going to push for ver. 4.6. At least it has a video input tool.
