I think that would be heavier than a real bumper, no?

Butch might be on to something: glue together multiple layers of foamcore at the corners, then sculpt it to get the smooth corners. You can also use styrofoam. Get an art student to do it — you have enough to do, and directors need practice delegating this kind of thing.

I recommend you go to a prop forum for this — we’re not talking about AE any more.

AE doesn’t like HDV. Use Quicktime to convert your HDV file into something like Animation, PNG, or Photo-JPEG. Then import the converted file into AE.

In older versions of AE you would look for the Preferences file in the AE directory, then rename or delete (I’d rename) the preferences file. Not sure about CS3 or 7.

There’s no need to use Caps Lock when rendering. You just minimize AE.

Caps Lock is to prevent screen redraw while working in AE. Sometimes you need to work in the timeline copying keyframes or whatever, you don’t need to see the comp window redraw itself, and the redraw would slow down your work. That’s what Caps Lock is for. So if you’re rendering and want to avoid Comp window redraw, just minimize AE and switch off Caps Lock.

Foam board is flat like a board.

I see problems with the corners, fillets, chamfers (rounded bits) of a truck bumper, as well as the durability.

I’d forget about the spinning bumper macho shot. Drop it from the shot list. There. You’ve cut something because of time and budget constraints. Now you’re a filmmaker. 🙂

[malcolm man] “It might not even have to be a chrome bumper.”

Indeed. Why make extra work by having to chrome it? The lesson being: make this kind of decision in pre-production, before you shoot or source the truck.

Oh, and a fiberglass bumper is not very light, and it’s also rather brittle. Consider having it molded from high-impact plastic or something if weight and durability are issues.

DO YOU HAVE QUICKTIME 7.4? IT IS BAD. TRY 7.4.1.
ARE YOU USING MP3 FILES? CONVERT THEM TO WAV OR AIFF BEFORE IMPORTING INTO AE.

Rendering? Minimize AE. No need for Caps Lock.

Foamcore (foam board) can be found at art stores or Staples.
As for fiberglass, you’d have to hire someone to build a bumper-shaped form, then lay up the fiberglass, molding it to the shape of the form. Maybe an auto-body shop could do it, using the real bumper as a form. Then you’d have to chrome it (talk to the auto-body guys) or wrap it in chrome mylar.

But AE is not the way to go.

They are the Cycore effects, found on the installation CD.
