To see if it is interlaced, interpret with fields “off”. If you then see interlacing, it was interlaced.
To confirm the proper field order (NOT “DOMINANCE”, APPLE!) re-Interpret lower fields first. Alt-double-click on the clip in the Project window. Step through the video in the window that just appeared, using the PageDn key. If the video jerks back and forth (ugh!), it should have been interpreted Upper field first.

Sometimes that kind of crash is the sign of bad RAM — when you use up one RAM chip and move to another, it crashes.

When film is telecine’d, 3:2 pulldown is added. Interlacing is normal: part of making 24 into 30 (29.97). Google “pulldown” and “after effects”.
Your job is to remove pulldown if you want to work in 24 (23.976). Check the Help.If you work in AE, use 23.976, not 23.98. Apple calls 23.976 23.98, but AE is more precise.

Try checking the Help for “roving keyframes”. It might do the trick.

There should be a dynamic preview button at the top of the timeline. Like many of AE’s buttons, I can’t describe it. If I recall, it’s next to the little shy guy.

Do you have Quicktime 7.4? If so, upgrade to the latest version.

Maybe you should have pixel aspect ratio correction on? It makes DV-like comps look normal while working on a computer.

I third the motion. Fake it with maybe three blurry stills and loop them.

Have you check out stock footage, and frozen some frames to get an idea?
