    Hmm … interesting … I can do that with a mask from AE, but not a paint stroke.

    1. draw a mask in AE
    2. select the mask and copy in AE
    3. paste into AI
    4. simplify in AI
    6. copy in AI
    7. select a paint stroke in AE (select the word “shape”)
    8. paste into that stroke in AE: the stroke now looks like the simplified mask

    … but I can’t get AE to copy a paint stroke and paste into AI, or get AE to convert that paint stroke to a mask.

    Anybody?

    AFAIK, you can’t paste a stroke from AE to Illustrator.

    Nope … except for Digital Anarchy’s 3D layer plug, but it uses a displacement map though, not a bezier handle thing.

    Real 3D apps: they’re not just for robots any more! 🙂

  • Actually, it should be (index-1)*diff :

    start =thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).effect(“start”)(“Slider”);
    diff = thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).effect(“diff”)(“Slider”);
    [position[0], position[1], start +(index-1)*diff]

    To remove the effect of the diff value from the position of the group. It’s a little cleaner.

    Ah, but our Eric might need a drive array to handle the high-data-rate files that the decklink deals with, and then he’d also have to find a monitor that takes SDI in, unless decklink now does composite or S-video out.

    If he’s cool with that, then it’s fine. 🙂 And Decklinks are cheap.

    I have the Decklink SP, Medea RTR, and send the signal to the monitor through component when a Beta deck isn’t hooked up.

  • Try using this layer index-based expression for each layer’s position:

    start = 0;
    diff = 0;
    [position[0], position[1], start + index*diff]

    1. create a null with two slider effects. Name one slider “start”, the other”diff”. Place it at the bottom of the stack in the timeline.
    2. apply the above expression to one layer
    3. Pickwhip each 0 above to one of the sliders
    4. test the expression by moving the sliders
    5. copy the expression by selecting “position”, then using edit>copy expression only
    6. select the rest of the layers and select edit>paste

    Start is the position of the first layer in the stack, diff is the gap between. Move the start slider to move the entire group, move the diff slider to change the gap. Change the layer stacking order in the timeline to change stacking order in the group.

    You should have something like this for each layer:

    start =thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).effect(“start”)(“Slider”);
    diff = thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).effect(“diff”)(“Slider”);
    [position[0], position[1], start + index*diff]

    Does that make sense?

    Regarding firewire, you’re actually comparing the Canopus D/A converter with the DV deck, and I’d say they’re both the same. No need for the Canopus if you have a DV deck.

    AE just uses the computer’s firewire out to your deck or the Canopus. There’s nothing better or worse for Firewire, really.
