Scratch that. Figured out my mistake.

For the benefit of anyone who may find this on a search and have the same issue…

My images were 16 bit. They must be 8 bit to work with FCP (at least as of version 6…I don’t know about 7).

    720×480 Anamorphic 29.97

Same settings from AE, in the FCP sequence, and on export from FCP.

No…sorry, I should have elaborated more. Upon export of a Quicktime movie (animation codec) at full resolution, it looks bad.

My final stop is Adobe Media Encoder, where I’m turning it into an FLV file. Everything (including titles created in Photoshop as PSD files) retains it’s crispness. But, the imported motion graphic just dies in FCP.

FYI – I just got finished doing a test of the same thing in Premiere Pro CS4 — same exact method, except I go straight to FLV. No dice…

So, wouldn’t seem to be an FCP thing…more of a “Steve is doing this the wrong way” thing.

    ??

    Thanks

Ext video was fine, as well. The editor who was having this issue is now concerned that it may have been a corruption in the source media on the FCP side — not a FW issue after all. If I find out otherwise, I’ll post what we learn.

Thanks for taking the time to help troubleshoot this — we appreciate it.

Sometimes…sometimes during playback, if you hit the spacebar to stop and then restart playback, it will jump to THAT frame and freeze. BUT…it’s inconsistent. It NEVER plays video back, but it’s inconsistent about what frame it shows. Bizarre, I know…but it is not a sequence setting issue. To prove it out, opened the same project on an older MacBook Pro and connected via the FW400 port, and it worked perfectly. It’s something about using that FW800 slot on the new one…

While playing back already captured footage (an edited timeline)…plays smoothly on the canvas, but the deck freezes on the first frame of video (audio still works fine…just video chokes). That frozen frame is not just what’s indicated by the monitor…it’s what’s actually written to the tape.

    Sequence settings are fine.

Kevin…thanks so much for taking the time. That clears up a lot of confusion. (I even looked at that preference more than once and was missing the forest for the trees)

One question — How do I keep the PSD from distorting? I brought a test PSD into FCP after unchecking that preference — and bingo, no more radical resizing. However, it still applied an aspect ratio distortion of 33.3. The file was created widescreen in PS and put on an anamorphic timeline.

Regardless, it was VERY quick to remedy that problem — but wondering if you can explain why it is doing it.

    Thanks,

I’ll be happy to let you know. I work for Cessna Aircraft Company…so, yes…we have some great machine shop guys.

It’ll probably be towards the end of summer before our new cameras are in, though. When they come in and I have my camera modified, I’ll let you know.

As a fellow left eye guy…I feel your pain.

When we get our 500s in later this summer, I am going to have our machine shop guys take a look and see if they can manufacture me a solid solution. I’ll keep this thread in mind if we come up with something…
