You can add a description to the original clip in the browser, using one of the empty columns of information available there.

Then you can use “find” to search for your key term. You could also export a batch list and import that into Excel, and sort by your search terms to have a listing.

Organizing your footage in a sequence is not the best way to work. Shane Ross, who posts here frequently, has a DVD on project organization within Final Cut, and you could probably gain a lot from that tutorial:

Quicktime is a wrapper or container. It doesn’t change the quality.

Here’s some info from Focus Enhancements’ site:

The FS-100 uses the FAT32 disk format, allowing up to 2GB of recorded video per clip. While recording, the FS-100 automatically creates a new clip when the 2GB limit is reached, ensuring that no frames are dropped. Depending on the length of your recording, you may have multiple 2GB clips.

After your recording is complete, you can go to the FS-100 Utilities menu and create a *QuickTime reference movie. This movie acts as a pointer, referencing your multiple clips to form one movie. This feature makes clip management more efficient, especially when editing—your NLE will import the reference movie as one clip.
*Because the QuickTime reference movie points to your original 2GB clips, the clips and the reference movie should always be archived together.

How long are the takes that are spanning? Perhaps you are exceeding a disk format file size limit of the media you are recording to.

Does the timecode of your DVCAM tapes match the timecode of the HDCAM?

If it doesn’t, your conform from HDCAM will be difficult.

If it does, then I would just change the reel numbers for each camera roll in Cinema Tools.

If Tape 1001, Camera Roll A1 is HDCAM tape 004, I would change it’s reel number from 1001 to 004, change A2 from 1001 to 005, etc, and then write which reels are contained on the DVCAM tape to show the 3 reels that it represents.

Since you are conforming in FCP, reel number and timecode are what you ultimately want to aim for.

Camera Roll is more oriented to a film workflow.

I’d try another cable, and try another device on that computer’s firewire port.

If another device works on that port, perhaps the firewire board inside the 1500 need to be re-seated.

As a start check “about this Mac” under the apple menu then “more info” then select the firewire bus to see if the device is recognized on the bus.
